Anyone remember the very short-lived television series "King's Crossing" from 1982? I remember watching it and finding the similarities between it and the Trixie Belden universe quite similar.

Thanks for the heads up! I loved this series when I was a kid.

Hopefully they will e-publish the whole series.

I highly recommend "The Girl Sleuth" by Bobbie Ann Mason to everyone in this thread. (Not in eBook, sadly.)

But, yeah, the "no mom! go wild!" thing was definitely escapist fantasy.

And yet I didn't regard it as escapist when I was a kid - I grew up on a farm and my friends and I had both lots of responsibility and lots of freedom, just as Trixie and her friends did. It seems odd now, but that's because kids are held to be more immature than they were a generation or two ago.

I think it depends on the family, the culture, and so forth. I can definitely come up with anecdata of less-supervised children now-a-days.

(And one of my parents nearly bled to death as a child because the children were allowed to run all over the farm. So it probably had good aspects and bad. )

I recently started working with an author who, among his other credits, wrote a Hardy Boys book as Franklin Dixon ... love those old house names, and what a continued commercial success for the companies that managed to franchise them.

Yes, exactly. And when you go back to Little House days even more so. Laura at ten years old left in charge of the house and her little sister while her parents make a trip to town and are gone two days. Imagine! Kids can be a lot more resourceful than some people now realize.

And they had to contend with things like wolves and bears, which aren't generally a problem for most kids these days!

Oh, and leeches. I've been rereading them now that they're available as ebooks, and practically fell off the bed laughing at the scene where Nellie comes out covered in them!

She was also 16 when she was hired as a Teacher of a one room schoolhouse. Could you imagine a 16 year old today trying to teach?

I'm looking forward to revisiting these... My mom got me hooked on chapter books by making me read her childhood copies when I was a kid -- funny to think that being 13 years old made Trixie & Honey seem like they were practically full-grown women to me!

Has anyone bought any of these yet? How are they, quality-wise? My first impulse when I see an old favorite is to buy them all right away but then I remember the poor quality OCR'ed Jack Ryan series books by Tom Clancy that I am stuck with.
