This would be serial cable linked to the not so mobile ereader. Microfiche pages can be "streamed" down that link for additional flexibility.

Funny, but that would actually be a "cereal cable." You know, a rope made of corn husks, used to pull over a box full of microfilm.

That would be dependent on the type of reader being used.

Back then, ebooks were simple ASCII text files and vastly smaller than today's bulky formats with their relatively huge cover art. The floppies on the Tandy 1000 would hold 10, or so, of the ebook files of the day.
