I would say that just about every device that is now a productivity device started off being described as an expensive toy.

"The personal computer is an extensive toy. Real people, who do real work, will use a mainframe "
"The Macintosh is an expensive toy. Real people who do real work will use an IBM computer with a command line interface."
"The cell phone is an expensive toy. Real people, who do real work, will use landlines for important business communications".

"The iphone is an expensive toy. Real people who do real work will use Blackberries".

The people who use the "expensive toy" line only reveal their lack of imagination.
The fact is that the Ipad is being used every day by businesses large and small throughout the world .
Now Apple's preferred method for file transfer, syncing and backup has been through ITunes. More recently, Apple is moving to iCloud as the way to do this. Apple has made a good start, but there is more work to do. In the meantime, there are many third party apps that do a great job of filling the gaps.

Waah I'm an apple fanboy apparently. I won't consider going back to pc/ not Mac computer to tablet. I like them. I like the iPad, I'm having an affair with my MacBook, I like how their store looks like a giant light box. I guess I'm just one of those people who finds a brand and sticks with it, I'm the same with amazon and kindle. I like to consider myself a loyal consumer, rather than a fangirl

Didn't cell phones start as military issue? I don't think it was ever considered a toy. Expensive yes, but not a toy.

For me, the iPad is an expensive toy. Keywords being for me. I'm well aware of various business and productivity use cases for the iPad. However, the way I use it, it is an expensive toy.

Its not even clear whats wrong with expensive toys

I can't create documents with my flat screen TV.
I can't run spreadsheets from my DVD player.
I can't print from my home stereo system.

Does that mean that they are worthless? Of course not.
If yoyu follow these anti iPad arguments to their logical cionclusion, any electronic devicethat doesn't work like a PC and does all the things a PC does is worthless and a waste of time.

There's absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever with expensive toys (as long as you don't go into debt acquiring them). I reckon my tech hobby is still a lot cheaper than cars.

Sorry but there is. Bluefire looks plain ugly on the iPad 3. There must be some anti-aliasing going on with 1024x768 screens that when rendered on the iPad 3's 2048x1536 display looks awful.

If anti-aliasing is a problem on text, it's something that they could easily fix in a software update. Whether they will, is another matter.

I suspect they will. The question is how quickly?

Rolling, floating, flying stock is very expensive but you can argue that they are necessities.
That is why I have to scrimp on my other toys that aren't so necessary.. Since I now have two tablets (Kindle and Samsung 7) I am looking for my next laptop to replace the old one I gave my cousin. I think I want to see the Windows 8 machine in a small notebook type format. A high end net-book or a low end ultra. [This may take until Christmas! Maybe another one of my kids will step up. ]

Actually some apps look much much better, even though they haven't been updated. If they use Apple's built-in text output functions, the display text will get an automatic 'retina upgrade'. Stanza looks much nicer than on an iPad 1.
Apps with their own custom text output functions won't benefit from this. (Bluefire being one)

I'm actually wishing Asus comes up with Transformer-like x86-based tablet+dock and hoping Intel manages to decrease power usage again with Ivy Bridge. The Samsung Series 7 slate looks awesome but the dock isn't quite as good for portable computing as the one Asus made for the Transformer. A co-worker brought his Transformer + dock and it really feels like a convertible laptop.
