I was on a flight where they announced the number of devices still on - and modified that number as people turned their devices off, so at least some flights have a way of identifying potentially interfering devices.

. But I'm with the for cripes sake live without your device for 15 minutes on either end of the flight crowd (with the full disclosure that I don't fly a lot). I can't imagine there would be any viable way of testing all devices (let alone combinations of devices which could suppress or enhance interference).

There are very good reasons to ban electronics during takeoff and landing. That is when during the flight something is most likely to go wrong. You need people to pay a little attention, not playing with their damn phones. And turbulence. I don't want to get hit by my neighbors' flying iThings. Stop being so damn spoiled, people. If it were up to me, I'd make everybody fit their carry on in a shoe box, with exception for babies and medical needs. Boarding and deboarding would take 5 mins. |

If something goes badly wrong on takeoff or landing, chances are I'm dead. And if I'm not, there really isn't anything I can go in the next 10 seconds to help the situation.

If dangerous flying things was the reason they wouldn't allow books or coffee cups (purchased after security of course) or ... I get just as distracted reading a paper book as I do reading my Kindle and I would like being hit by a cup of nearly boiling coffee even less than a Kindle.

I only fly 6-8 times a year so I am not impacted like those who fly twice daily. Even if I flew weekly, week in week out I doubt it would mess up my life any more than traffic lights. Helen |

I'm not weighing in on any particular side of this, just saying that it's fairly often not just 10-15 minutes at stake.

I would be much more in favor of the rule if it were actually limited to actual takeoffs, not just to time spent sitting on the runway.

Yes, if they changed the rule to when the plane is actually cleared for takeoff, at least for handheld devices (laptops obviously take more time to secure) it would be much less irritating. But at a big airport like LAX or LHR or many others, the time from the door closing to 10,000 feet can easily be over an hour, most of which is spent simply sitting on the tarmac.

But it's not actually possible to turn a Kindle off, only put it to sleep, with or without a picture on the screen......................

I'd just make a cover out of an old book and nobody would be any the wiser. |

I have been flying a lot lately... in January ad February I have been on an average 10 flights a week. I carry a magazine or two with me for those take-off and landing times... but having to do that annoys the heck out of me. Lately, I have kept reading on my SONY PRS950 during take off and landing unless someone specifically asks me to turn it off... many times they don't, it's about 50-50. Of course, I don't go around waving it in the air to make it noticeable. I do keep wifi and 3g off during the entire flight. Same on my iPad. I think electronic devices without connections should be allowed on. But I do realize that's impossible to enforce. But I also can't count the number of times I have heard cellphones ring during the takeoff stages. People ignore warnings - and sometimes they forget. If electronic devices are a threat, we are all screwed - you just can't rely on people to turn them off. I have had now two instances of not being allowed to use an eink AT ALL during a flight. Both with Alitalia. They claim they have a list of 'approved devices'. Everything else has to be off. The iPad is on it, the kindle and sony readers are not. |
