I don't know what it is about google books, but it feels really sterile and generic. They need to hire some designers. Amazon looks like something from the 90s, but it works for them because they're established and therefore the design looks nice and familiar rather than out of date.

The only thing I am able to find on Google Books is free stuff... either they aren't actually selling anything in Germany or they're very good at hiding it

I've only purchased one title from Google Books, the only other retailer that had it was Amazon and I try to buy epub when I can. The quality was as good as any other ebook I've bought, certainly no worse.
It is a little easier to buy if you don't have an android device now.

I don't have a crystal ball so I can't guess who will win.

Google has gotten much better, the eReader app works great but it has few features and optionsis almost as usable as the kindle. The google sync is far better and the conversion between PDF vs ePUB is near perfect. Google books can also be read on other devices that support Adobe DRM. Google DRM does not seem to be limited to a device so I can read a book on as many Android devices I have registered to my account.

Google books is integrated nicely to their store and to the Android platform. However Amazon is just as well integrated and have excellent customer support.

Right now the eBook market is too young to determine a clear long term victor but both platforms have some distinct advantage over the other. I have not bought Amazon books in some time and have never bought a book from Google up until a few months ago. I purchased the "Princes Bride" for $3.99.

I don't know if it's a promo but it was under their Sword Play starting at $3.99 banner in their market app

If it is a promo deal, I hope they keep it up. I've bought more ebooks from google lately than I've bought anywhere in a long time. For a long time I've said I keep my ebook purchases under $5, due to my general budget vs rate I read, and Google has a lot under that price range. We've not seen sales in ages, so I'm happy.
