Not only is The Rolling Stones set in the same universe as The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, there's even a character in common. Young 'Hazel' who helps out in the hair salon (and with the Revolution) in TMiaHM is Grandma Hazel in TRS. Quite deliberately so, in fact, as TRS was written well before TMiaHM. Heinlein is on record (somewhere, lost the info) as saying that the characters are the same person.

She shows up again in one of the Lazarus Long books in a cross-universe travel kind of way.

In keeping with the title of the thread (and not intending to reply to anyone's prior posts ... although I read some of them .... I am a serious Henlein fan except for some of his much later works where he just seemed to go all senile and not in a nice way, but more in the creepy old guy who spends way too much time talking about tapping young tail kind of way), at this moment I have just finished "When You Are Engulfed in Flames" by David Sedaris (and which was great), and have just started "While They Were Sleeping" which is about the murder of several of the Gilley family by their son. The reviewer in Time Magazine gave it sort of a lukewarm review, but so far I like it. The same article reviewed "The Monster of Florence" another true crime book, so that's next on the list. After that (or maybe before that) will be Steven King's latest, "Duma Key."

I'm also re-formatting all of the Beatrix Potter books from PG. I know they are already available in mobi format, but the color pictures just don't come across on the page very well. No real contrast. So, I am taking the images, putting them in grayscale, and then working with the contrast and color reduction until I get something that looks a little better in e-ink.

I would like to have all of them done so that my friends (who I am determined are going to purchase a Kindle) can read those books to their grandchildren. Tom Kitten was always my favorite ... and I still have my original hardcover copy.

Oh, an appropos of nothing ... they gave me the most beautiful book today of the art of George Rodrigue. I don't know if any of you are Blue Dog fans, but his art work just plain makes me happy. So, this was probably one of the most well thought out presents I've ever gotten from anyone .... and it's not even close to my birthday.

I knew about the overlap character (and yes, she does appear again in The Number of the Beast and The Cat Who Walks Through Walls), but wasn't sure Heinlein definitely meant the two books to be in the same universe. Nice to have that confirmation.

Meanwhile, I'm actually enjoying Thief of Time, so I'm sticking with it for now.

Just finished reading The Secret History of Moscow by Ekaterina Sedia.
Reading blogs’ reviews on this book, I was under the impression it was a good fantasy.
It is not.
I would say it is a fiction with a bit of introduction of Russian fairy tales' protagonists such as Koschey the Deathless, some bits and pieces of history of Moscow, points of view of people who lived in the former USSR and witnessed the cataclysm of Perestroyka but otherwise it is a very odd book.
I didn’t like it. I found it extremely boring. All the time I hoped some action is going to take place maybe just maybe in the next chapter but it never happened. The characters and their life stories were quite real, nothing to do with fantasy genre. The ending was just meh.

I think people who liked American Gods by Neil Gaiman, might like this book.

After I read the book I also read an interview with the writer and looks like her writing style is just not my cup of tea.
Interview with Ekaterina Sedia

I believe I am not ready to start Child of Flame [Crown of Stars 4] by Kate Elliott yet, so I am going to read The Electric Church by Jeff Somers

You appear to be reading at about twice the rate that I am. In 2008, I have read 62 books - 36 in paper, 22 on the Kindle (11 purchased & 11 free), and 3 audio books (unabridged CDs). That's 21,500 pages (or page equivalents). Most of my reads have been mysteries and science fiction. Stir in a couple of chicklit and fantasy books and then some classic YA fiction.

Re-reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Why? It's raining here in South Florida....every day...and there's nothing more comfortable than sitting in a cozy room, with milk and cookies, and reliving memories with some of your favorite characters.

After one week like that, I would be unable to squeeze myself into door frame. I always envy people who can do it (like my dad, he can eat just anything and never get fat).

Finished Thief of Time last night. Might be my favorite of the Discworld novels so far, after A Hat Full of Sky.

My all time favorite is Pyramids. Followed by Wyrd Sisters. What can I dsay, I'm a classicist!

Oh, well, I have nothing against Wyrd Sisters. Haven't read Pyramids yet, though I was looking at the description earlier today, and thinking, "Well, maybe...."

My problem with Pratchett, I think, is that he likes poking fun at really stupid people doing really stupid things. I get bored reading about really stupid people and really stupid things (perhaps because I have to deal so much with that in "real life" every day). Thief of Time seemed to have more reasonably intelligent people occasionally doing ordinarily stupid things, then picking up the pieces, interspersed with just a few RSSDRST in the background. I seem to like that combination better. (The wizards just grate on my nerves.)

I'm reading the Tarzan (Edgar Rice Burroughs) series. 1) Tarzan of the Apes 2) Return of Tarzan 3) Beast of Tarzan 4) Son of Tarzan 5) Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar 6) Jungle Tales of Tarzan. All free downloads. I've finished the first 4.

I'm also a great lover of Jane Austen's 'Pride & Prejudice' and am reading some modern works continuing the story. Books by Pamela Aidan.

I have purchased but have yet to read 'The Twilight Saga', a 'young vampires in love' book collection that has just been made into a movie.

I also have the entire HP Lovecraft collection of works that I have to get through.
