My wife ordered iPad3 replacements and we are selling our iPad1's to subsidize the $1400 expenditure.

EDIT: getting the new iPad is a little like getting glasses. For instance, i am subscribed to several daily comic strips. They fit right onto the iPad screen page. I used to have to enlarge them a little to read them. No more. Last edited by Harmon; 03-18-2012 at 07:58 PM. |

I said to myself I would upgrade from my iPad1 when they improved the screen, so didn't see enough had changed in number 2 to warrant it.
As a reader, the screen alone is worth the update. My original iPad is still going like a trooper, and I know that there's been barely a day where I haven't used it for something. It'll get schlepped to work now that it's getting replaced for reading. I did think a bit more seriously about competitors' tablets this time. What made it a no-brainer for me to stick with Apple was: - They only release upgraded models once a year, and keep support for the old ones. - The software market is still on a different planet. - The iPad is on the verge of becoming the accepted tablet for business (imo). - So many of the competitors' tablets seem to have features that simply don't work. You're taking a gamble on an entirely untried system. - There's that excitement factor that you get with a new Apple device. It just feels professional and polished. Thought about holding off until the iPad1 dies / to see what version 4 brings. In the end, though, it's the screen I wanted them to improve, and they've done it. Will every iPad from now on simply be called 'the New iPad', or have we reached a point at which we're going to start to see much smaller improvements year-on-year? I suspect the latter. |

I suspect the latter as well. I "upgraded" to the 3 because of the screen & I hd an iPad 2. But I told myself, & my wife that I would buy it if it had a retina display. If it didn't I don't think I would have upgraded. The iPad 2 is still a very capable machine.

There's a major hiccup with the ipad as a business device. Businesses can't manage them remotely. Apple does have an 'ipad configurator' but it requires physically plugging in the device to the computer that manages the configuration. I know executives love them (ours certainly do!) but when you're talking about proprietary or HIPAA protected information being synced with the 'cloud', IT shops still have big concerns. This is one area that Windows 8 tablets, if they work as advertised, have an edge. They'll be manageable with SCCM and group policy. Big win for businesses. |

The retina display was worth the price of admission, but maybe the most undervalued improvement was the doubling of internal RAM from 512Mb to 1Gb. The Dolphin web browser (one of the best 3rd party browsers, IMO) used to start warning me at the 5th open tab on my iPad 2, now it doesn't start whining until the 8th tab.
Then there's the whole notion of trickledown happiness. My wife got my iPad 2 and she's happy. My nephews got her iPad 1 and they're happy too. Everybody's happy, but especially me. |

Since I upgraded from the original iPad, the virtures of the new iPad are more evident to me. The screen is the biggie - it just makes for more comfortable reading.
Ergonomics is next. It weighs less than the original, and the design maximizes that experience. But the device itself seems half the thickness of the original because of the magnetic cover, since there's no back cover to deal with. Everything is faster on the new iPad. Magazine downloads seem twice as fast, as do screen page changes. I think that Apple went with "the new iPad" name because it recognizes that only incremental improvements are likely from here on out. I can imagine a voice controled iPad, perhaps, and continue to hope for a smaller version, but short of being able to fold it or roll it up & put it in your pocket, just what else of any great significance can be done? Faster, lighter, better speaker - all incremental rather than gamechanging. By using this name, & eliminating the version numbers, Apple is positioned to just sell the new iPad every year, without it ever really getting old. |

The real problem is for accessory dealers. How do you say a case is compatible with "the ipad"? Maybe by year? "Made for iPad 2012"

Actually, I did, and from an iPad 2 and I hope they dont do anything to unsatisfy me...
I'm still very happy with the iPhone 4 and hope that it'll be the same with the iPad... I guess the screen just does it... It's really good... |

I'm speaking purely from an IT perspective. I'm involved right now with evaluating business "need" (ie, executives WANT an ipad) with security requirements. Ipads don't meet our requirements.

No executive who is worth the title would accept that answer. Executives who listen to "reason" don't get much done. Steve Jobs. QED.
