Is Apple betting the farm on the new iPad (iPad3 or iPadHD or ?)?

I like the specs of the new iPad, but there's simply no way in or out of a certain warm place that I would ever buy a tablet without an expansion slot. I guess I can see, just, how some people might actually consider a device without an expansion slot usable, but at least for me the lack of one makes it a pointless, overpriced toy.

But...but a micro sd card doesn't fit the icloud philosophy or pricing. $20 for 10GB per annum. 5 years = $100.

It is, of course, by design. They want to keep you in their system, to buy and stream content from iTunes (same for the Amazon Fire). They don't want us dirty little sideloaders.

I actually found the lack of an expansion slot on my ipod (which I use as a PDA, not a music player), a lot less of an issue than I thought it would be. Between webdav apps, email and dropbox, I have no trouble getting content in and out of my ipod without even touching itunes.

That being said, when I bought my android tab, I made sure there was a SD slot in it for those "just in case" times. I ran into one such time just once since I got the tablet - transfering pictures from my camera to my tablet, no computer around. Didn't work anyway, as the camera was SD card and the tablet was MicroSD. The Acer A100 doesn't have USB host, so I couldn't use a card reader either.

I probably would have bought an ipad, but I wanted 7" with GPS (real, not cell tower), so I went android. Expansion slot turned out not to be and issue.

My wife uses her Acer A500 for work. We would have gotten her an ipad (she also has an ipod touch used as a PDA mostly), but due to security concerns with her computer, she couldn't install itunes or even use wireless networking. So USB transfer only for her, but again, the expansion slot not really an issue.

YMMV etc.

That's because you haven't done any reasersch nor understand the cloud. It may not be physically be built in but I can easily use SD cards with the iPad. I also have the option to use other external storage, which is exactly what an SD card slot would bring. So let me ask you, what is it that makes an SD card so important that without it renders the iPad useless, i.e a toy in your words. Look forward to the response.

Come up with something better. The app store has everything that is needed and more. Unless your pirating apps, then there's no reason to side load. So come up with something else. Fine with me. But it's worth the price to me when it almost completely replaces my laptop. It s my primary computing device. Does everything I want to do. & works flawlessly. So what's the problem. Apple isn't the 1st to overcharge for a product. Why aren't they allowed to make money. Is the transformer prime not worthy of its price tag which I'm sure is a huge mark up. It's a beautiful device too & I'm sure works wonderfully. Why shouldn't asus make those profits. I'm sure they didn't put as much into R&D into it as apple. Especially considering they get a free OS. Same could be said for Samsung, they make beautiful devices too, I'm sure they make quite a bit of profit too, so are they not allowed to make money. Again, you knock apple just because you have some sort of vendetta against them. That's fine, but be a little more realistic.

That's the question on everyone's mind this morning as we brace ourselves for Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL [FREE Stock Trend Analysis]) conference call. But Apple won't be talking sales numbers; rather, the company is going to use the call to discuss how it plans to use it cash. Of course, the mere fact that Apple won't talk about the iPad is drawing concern for how well the device is actually selling at retail. While the lines were long in New York and other major locations, the same cannot be said for the rest of the world.

At one Metro Detroit location, for example, there were plenty of iPads for everyone. I've attended a few other Apple launches, and this was the first time that the retailer might have actually had enough units to last through the weekend. And when you consider how quickly the line diminished (roughly 50 people were there when the doors opened; 30 minutes later, no one was left), it's possible that this particular location still has a few iPads in stock.

Based on U.S. iPad Traffic data, Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry believes that the new iPad might not be as hot as the iPhone 4S. “Developers think that http://labs.chitika.com/ipad/ is a good reflection of U.S iPad Traffic Breakdown and is probably accurate,” he wrote in a report late Sunday evening. “We don't know how the global launch is coming.”

“The Chitika site points out that about 4.48% of application traffic is coming from the new iPad,” Chowdhry continued. “The converged view is that if the new iPad was as successful as the iPhone 4S launch, the traffic from the new iPad should have been 12% - 15% of the application traffic within 48 hours, and it is not, which probably indicates a softer adoption for the new iPad.”
