If you tweak Sony's firmware a little tiny bit, it does miracles.

The user interface is actually quite nice, as is the software. There are things that could be better (like missing shelves, translation dictionaries need an update), but the actual reading experience is very nice. I rarely have a dead tap or double page turn, maybe 1 or 2 in 100 page turns (and that can always happen with touch screens). What I like best is that you can use tapping to browse, select three different "tap area settings", change the font, font size, margins and line spacing. You can add your own fonts as well. And hopefully in a new update there will be shelves and maybe some of the other wishes (like more tap areas) and bug fixes as well for those that experience them (I'm lucky not to have these problems, not saying there aren't any). Best would be if you could look at the devices your most instereted in "in person". I did that and decided to get the Kobo - and haven't regretted it. I use the plugin as well, which makes my Kobo even better. ![]() |

The Kobo STILL has a very SERIOUS bug pertaining to embedded fonts. Kobo has been told of this but refuses to fix it. With this bug, it's off the list of approved devices.

The way to do embedded fonts is to place the font-face in the body style. That activates the font. It's how most ePub are made that have embedded fonts. Publishers do it that way. Kobo ignores the font-face if it's part of the body. So this breaks most embedded fonts.

Maybe they'll add embedded fonts support in the future. (Though I don't really care, I must admit.) But hopefully I will be able to override pre-selected fonts since that's one thing I enjoy about ebooks - I can select a font I like. ![]() |

You think this is a good thing, but it's really not. It's just a bug that makes the Kobo a waste of time to bother with. |

Not saying that it's not a desirable feature, but it doesn't make the Kobo a horrid device or any such thing. The Kobo might not be a device for you, but it is a nice reader. And some people simply don't care that some ebooks won't have embedded fonts (most don't have them anyway). No e-reader is perfect. And some books just don't really "work" all that well in e-format. |

No one (or everyone) is. As you've said, it is very much a personal choice. You may detest the Kobo, of course. Though I think that detest is such a strong word and feeling... IMHO wasted on such a rather trivial matter like e-reader preferences. Of course it's okay to dislike something. There are a lot of things I don't like. I'm just trying not to make other people feel bad about their choices and preferences. Which does not mean that I don't tell people why I dislike something. ![]() |

The ability of my reader of choice to override any font that publisher choose is by large margin my most favorite feature. I personally want to set the font, fontsize, margins, *justification*, first line indentation, line spacing and hyphenation to precise values I want.
My reader can also display epubs with all publisher included bells and whistles, but I haven't seen any book that I would prefer to read this way. So, Your Mileage May Vary. |

"a waste of time to bother with", "a great many people detest the Kobo".
Why such a strong feeling? I can understand not really liking it and/or preferring other e-readers, but these kind of comments seem very strong?! |
