No more Encyclopaedia Britannica at least as DTB.

Now that is a major sign of a format switch.
As much as it saddens me, I relaize the rationale behind the decision.

Yeah. e-readers had really nothing to do with it. It was the internet and wiki that killed them. They havent really sold for years. This is a good move. I bet the online edition of EB is far superior to wiki in some repsects.

If you're looking for an authoritative source, I don't think price should be the primary criteria, especially when it's a relatively paltry amount.

That's not to say Wikipedia isn't a valuable resource, because it is, but the same things that make it so useful also tend to make it less reliable. Yeah, I know "real" encyclopedias have mistakes also, but it's not like you or me can edit the EB as a joke.

My daughter is in first grade and studying Africa and we have done lots of research online. We just use plain old Google and see what we get. I really don't think there's anything the encyclopedia companies could have done differently, it's just a different world today.

So casually looking something up means you don't need to bother about the accuracy or bias of the information... wiki is useful but I always temper it with at least another source, doesn't exactly take very long...
