Real books vs e-books? IMHO, there is room for both. I get as much pleasure looking at my wall full of books, as I do looking at my kindle waiting for me on a side table. THATS because I know whats waiting for me when I turn it on. Two totally different tactile

There was an other device I remember from way back, just as old as the ebook. I don't have time to look it up. It consisted of a pad containing multiple metal pins under a rubber sheet. When a page was displayed, small actuators pushed the required pins up a milimeter or so. As binary as eink.

paperback novel is doomed.

Today's target is smokers.

What is it about smokers that makes it almost automatic to drop their used butts all over the place?

We have a small house for rent, and several of the previous tenants have been smokers. At our request, they have not smoked in the house, but NOTHING seems to keep them from leaving butts all over the outdoors - driveways, off the side of the deck, in the grass anywhere a chair might have been sitting. I acknowledge the efforts taken to keep smoke from inside the house, but WHY CAN'T THEY CLEAN UP THEIR ASHES? Even if they were in some kind of can or ashtray, at least that can be dumped in the garbage, but now we either have to live with the stupid stuff, or individually pick up the scattered pieces of garbage.

Yesterday, I was in the parking lot of a major electronics store. Same thing, cigarette butts all over the parking lot. If cities are making a big fuss about plastic bags blowing all over the place, can we do something similar about stray butts?

I think most litter is produced by these type of smokers (some smokers are more considerate); the theory being that thoughtlessly dropping cig butts acclimatises them to dropping other types of litter too.
Hopefully, as smoking declines, so will littering in general.

After asking a few of them at work it turns out for most to be a vengeance for being ousted.

Don't you believe them for a second. People have been tossing their cigarette butts onto the street (either while walking or driving ... even with ashtrays in their cars) for freaking ever. Long before they were "ousted" to smoke outside of public buildings.

But hey .... they've gotten vengance against us non smokers for years and years, making us breathe in their foul fumes ... day after day after day.

Gee .... can you tell who grew up with asthma and yet was assigned a chain smoking roommate by the powers that be at UCLA?? Hmmm?? Two guesses and the first one doesn't count.

Heh! In my job there's worse than smoke; wood dust and lacquer fumes. Believe it or not, the worst chain smokers in the bunch are the sanders and the painters. Talk about slow suicide!

It's as dead as can be, repairs will cost as much as a new one
Checking with my insurance if there's a dumbass clause that would cover it.

Usually you have to pay extra for that. I was lucky when I drowned my laptop in that I had purchased the dumbass coverage only a month before.

ouch and they always say red wine is supposed to be good for your heart... i'm guessing this glass did a lot more harm than good to yours. good luck with the insurance... i hope you get lucky and there *is* a "dumbass clause".
