Finished: Faro's Daughter, by Georgette Heyer. A typical Heyer Regency, but not her best of those, certainly. Call it a 4 out of 5. I liked the characters, but found the premise even more unbelievable than her usual ones.
Next up, a couple of Dana Stabenow short stories, then possibly "Jump Gate Twist" the first two of Mark L. van Name's Jon & Lobo series. |

I have never been able to get anything out of audio books. The temptation to be distracted by one thing or the other is just too great and so I keep missing bits. |

Overall, rather disappointing. Grade it a D+ [2 stars]. Next is a new author for me. Ed McBain's Cop Hater. |

Slightly off topic, one of my favorite audio book narrators is Barbara Rosenblatt. My first audio book (back when they were called Books on Tape and digital formats didn't yet exist) was Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters. For a long time I thought Ms. Rosenblatt was British and she did a very good American accent, rather than the other way around. ![]() ElsieC |

In the past week most of Heather Graham's series thrillers in order, Harrison, Flynn, Ghost, Vampire, Evil etc, so far about 26 of them. I still have some 9 to go to finish her up. Also about 10 NF books, various topics. I'm reading one about Jack the Ripper I haven't read before. I just finished up a book about the last week of Lincoln's life and I've got one on Andersonville on the disk too that I've been half reading off and on between thrillers. I'm a history buff and I read a lot of vintage true crime stuff. I spent most of last week reading some Holocaust/Nazi bio related stuff and some Civil War stuff. This week I'm kind of continuing the latter but also adding in some fiction. I always have a bunch of the romantic poets and a few classics on my tablet. I started out with the Cruz by reading Stoker, LeFanu, Polidori, and Shelly, all the classic monster tales plus a lot of Byron. (He's a favorite.)
It's not uncommon for me to read 40-50 books a week. I'm a very fast, comprehensive reader and I don't watch too much TV besides. I'm self employed, not exactly busy at the moment, and I don't sleep a whole lot so I usually have plenty of time to read. A 500 page book is about 2 hour read so I can sit there and pretty much destroy a folder of books in a long night. I'm probably going to wear out this Cruz in a year and/or need a new one or a new battery at the very least. I'm thinking about ordering one pretty soon anyhow just to have a backup. I do try to use it on the charger sometimes too but I can see myself using up a battery pretty quick considering how much I am reading every day. I have eye issues and I'm sure my eye doctor would have something to say about it if he knew how much time I spent reading every day, laugh, but I suppose the reading in night mode on the Cruz is at least a bit less stressful to the eyes than using the computer at least. At least I think it is. I like it a lot more than reading paper or in day format I think. Last edited by magkelly; 03-13-2012 at 11:49 PM. |

Just finished "reading" (audiobook) _Just After Sunset_ a collection of short stories by Steven King. Most of them were very good. One was quite disgusting. There is suspense, fantasy, etc... not all are stories I would have expected of King. But, I recommend it with 3.5 of 5 stars.

I'm reading Dear Mr. Holmes: Seven Holmes on the Range Mysteries by Steve Hockensmith. Yes, I know I mercilessly ragged Hockensmith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but this offering is hilarious and the mysteries are extremely entertaining. To be sure, I hated P&P&Z so much, I wouldn't have given this author a second thought had I not heard one of his stories on the Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine's Fiction Podcast (Episode 16: "Fruitcake" by Steve Hockensmith) without realizing until after the podcast that it was the same author.
If you're curious about the Holmes on the Range series, you can listen to the short story "Dear Doctor Watson" free at Ellery Queen's home at PodOmatic. Very highly recommended. Quote:

'why we get fat' by Gary Taubes.
Far more accessible than 'good calories, bad calories'. I have Robb Wolf's 'The Paleo Solution' to read soon too. |
