I've found the value on your time is very flexible... I've quoted for web design jobs and found myself under quoting my time, and effectively working for free. Do you down tools and ask the client for more money or keep going? Sometimes it sucks.

However I recommend a lot of Indies take a look at the Linkedin groups, I've caused a bit of stir showing the much cheaper way of getting published and felt really sorry for those that got stung for $5000 or more, and got nothing in return.

It is sad...

That is one of the problems the joys of freelancing how much your time is worth is subjective to the work. The same is goes for book marketing, although I equate the time spent marketing is time away from doing what I want to do which is writing... I once told my wife that in many ways my time is worth crap, unless its a job I don't want to do, then my time is worth three times as much to me...

I have to say that some times going that extra mile for people does pay off. I get a lot of recommendations that I probably wouldn't have got if I'd worked nine to five. 9 to 5! That's only true in a movie right?

See, I see the time I spend writing as my hobby, my downtime, my entertainment. I see the time spent in marketing (which I suck at) at the "work" part of being a writer. If I could get a reasonable deal with a publisher to do all that for me, I would jump on it.

It doesn't really work that way. I've just signed a contract with a major publisher, and I'm still expected to do a lot of marketing. The diffference is that this publisher has a much bigger distribution network than my small publisher. But the marketing stuff is still the same.

I'm not saying that is the norm, just what some people were saying on Linked in.
