There have been sites like that for years. But for one reason or another, no one that I know of has ever been able to make a purchase... While I wouldn't doubt that whale meat IS sold in Japan, I have never seen it or been able to even find it. There are private clubs all over the world that specialize in exotic foods without regard for International protection laws. I'm sure they exist in Japan. As I said, marijuana is an absolute no-no here, but I can find some given 2-3 days. Bullets might take a week or two to find. I've been looking at menus for 25 years...

Now possibly moving into dangerous territory (move me if you need to ).

Is it true that the Japanese government used $30million from the Tsunami relief fund to provide a security ship for the whaling fleet this year?
Two points to consider;
1. Would it cost $30 million to send even an aircraft carrier, to say nothing of a smaller war ship, out to sea for a couple of weeks? The estimated cost of running an aircraft carrier is half a million per day. $30 mil would give you eight weeks of carrier duty. Probably half a year of smaller war ship duty. The whaling season is just a few weeks.

2. Do you imagine that the Japanese citizens would stand for that? Especially those from the Tsunami-affected areas? I could see the government subsidizing the Tuna fleets, (though NOT with monies earmarked for Tsunami recovery,) as they bring in billions of dollars in revenue, and their catch is sold in every sushi shop around the world. Are there many whale shops in your neighborhood?

Sounds to me as though the newspapers were running out of screamer headlines and thought up a good one!

Thinking about it for the past few hours, I'd be more inclined to believe that some government officials spent $30 mil from the Tsunami Relief fund on Geisha Parties and travel... That sort of stuff does happen.

I did think it was over the top, but I am pretty sure I heard the Greenpeace guy say it. There was a government ship following the fleet around this season.

I'm sure Greenpeace wouldn't exaggerate...

If this photo is the government ship spoken of, it's 1/4 the size (or smaller) than an aircraft carrier, and NOT a war ship at all. I'd guess that $30 million would pay for two years worth of sailing, rather than two months.

I do, however, think it was very nice of them to 'label' the ship for us. Rather like the little blinking red light Hollywood puts on all bombs.

Thank God there are newspapers and Internet to give us verified accurate information.

I guess this must sound like a dumb question, but why are the words "Government of Japan" in English?

Or even more so ... why are there words there anyway?!? Have you ever seen a ship that was labeled for consumption? As I said, little blinking red lights on bombs? Countdown timers that are visible to help the defusers? Perhaps scary music in the background?

God bless the media.

Just so there is no confusion, I don't believe anything that I can't put in my mouth... If it's been written in newspapers or the Internet, it is automatically incorrect! Not 'wrong.' Just 'incorrect.' I question EVERYTHING.

I still have doubts about:
The moon landing
Our stated reason for fighting in the Middle East
the collapse of the Twin Towers
The Kennedy assassination

Not saying 'no.' Just saying I have my doubts.

I think they labeled the ship because it was going to be in Ozzie waters. There are reports they did have their radar thingy on and that they were here quite legally and openly.

This is apparently the same ship that cut a protester's ship in two a year or two ago. Repainted. It was photographed following the protesters this year, and was seen off Brisvegas, last week on its way home.

Do un-labeled ship routinely get fired upon in Ozzie waters? I would think have the name on the bow in both Japanese Kanji and Roman letters would be sufficient. Perhaps a name painted on the stern for sailboats?

Not that I know of. It seems they wanted to be identifed as a government vessel. In prior years it just had the name on the front and stern (see old photo when it was blue). Although I think previously it actually was a participant in whaling and therefore a target for protesters.

We were swooped by customs aeroplanes (I think they called us on the radio too) leaving through the barrier reef years ago, but not shot at. I think they were checking we weren't smugglers.

Although there was that very low round the island (I wet my pants) buzz by two FA18s (I think), when we were anchored off a bombing range near Townsville (A military/airforce town). they did not call us. I think they also wet their pants laughing at the fright we got. I nearly fell off the deck and spilled my rice bubbles.

They should never have taken 'Sea Patrol' off the air...

Whilst we are talking about Japan, I am remembering the nasty tsunami one year on. Looking at some of the pictures with my heart in my mouth.

My heart goes out to all those people that experienced the horror first hand.

It wasn't a good experience for a lot of people. Fortunately, time helps heal. Downtown businesses have re-opened. All but four of the city's schools are back open now. Radiation concerns have also added to the problem but
excessive levels haven't been detected in the drinking water so far. Another 2-3 years and you won't even recognize it as a disaster area. There is still an area of contamination around the nuclear plant, but outside the 12-mile exclusion zone life goes on as before.
