LOL! I still have my original iphone 8G. Its doing duty in a Sony Dock as an audiobook player

"Smaller" is why I was considering an Android phone with a 4-5" display. I may still take that path, Huawei is going to release a pentaband with almost identical specs to the Samsung Galaxy SII, and it will be a whole lot cheaper. I was also looking at the Note, with its 5". I like the size of my Sony PRS screen but for some reason I simply cannot get into reading on the device. Bit of a wasted purchase. Guess I prefer backlit, and colour.

same issue with mine, a restart is pointless now because of the way iOS 5 works, the status of all apps opened is remembered, so doing a restart brings you back to exactly how it was before the restart, apps crashing is usually when it runs out of ram and the os has not auto closed unused apps

the only way I can stop the apps crashing is to occasionally double tap the home button to bring up the list of apps used in a line at the bottom, press and hold one one of them till the '-' thing appears and then hit the minus against all apps, this will close these apps down fully

Not having any issues with my 8GB iPod touch 4 running iOS 5.0.1

While I don't use very many apps, it does get used at least 4 hours each day. It mostly sits in a speaker dock playing internet radio and audiobooks.

That's because of your usage. I doubt audio playback takes too much memory. Meanwhile, having lots of apps in the background often cause app crashes and occasional hanging.

@paulsalter
Hard resetting still works fine for me (keep holding power button until device powers off and restarts) for the times when my device becomes unresponsive.

Blame that on the measly 256MB of RAM.

Would love to see an iPod touch with better specs, but doubt much will change. Instead, I have a better spec'd Galaxy Player as my primary pocket net device.

I got an iPod touch 8GB as entry to the IOS and still use it now and then.

Of course, the iPad is a lot better for games and reading, so my kids and myself are now using that mostly (and I use the Kindle Fire for reading mainly because it is more portable)

Maybe the upcoming (Q3 2012) iPad mini with 7" screen might make sense ... large enough for reading, while still portable, allowing you to use all the iOS apps.

Best regards,
Andy

IF Apple would make a smaller iPad, I would buy it in a heartbeat... but Steve Jobs always said they wouldnt go down that path and I suspect for a while at least, the others will still follow his lead. His legacy is that he was an absolutely brilliant marketer who knew what would work. I doubt there will be an ipad mini this year. Maybe next.

Indeed, that was very much my understanding as well ... until the rumour mill started again yesterday over some alleged leaking of Samsung official documents by an insider: http://www.oled-display.net/apple-ip...future-ipads/#

I installed 5.1 and while it has been only a couple of days, it 'feels' more stable. Battery seems not to drain as fast. I could be imagining all of this of course.

But after a couple of days of no crashes, the Kobo app crashed this morning for no reason. It had been launched several minutes prior to this so any apps that might have been doing something in the background had plenty of time to shut down and release resources (and in this case, I'm pretty confident that none were in fact running. So who knows why it happened.

Again, I don't recall having issues like this prior to 5.x. But no doubt iPod Touch has the lowest priority in terms of testing and fixing things, as the most resource constrained devices running iOS, and therefore the most challenging to develop for.

I dont think iPod touch is low priority. Its just not its time. I'd be expecting updated iPod Touch around June/July. Keep fingers crossed.

I would hold off getting an iPod touch till the fall. Apple seems to be on a cycle where they refresh the iPod touch hardware every two years and the last refresh was fall 2010. My guess is that we'll see a new iPod touch this year with at least the same processor that's now in the iPad 3 and at least 512 ram. There will probably be a better camera as well , up to the standard of the iPad 3.

It was refreshed every year until last year, when all they did was to make it available in white. But for sure a new model is due this year, probably in September.

Not always for the cheapest model. The 2009 iPod Touch 8GB was the same as the 2nd gen 2008 iPod Touch. Only the more expensive 32GB and 64GB models got the CPU/GPU upgrade.

Yes, I know. However, if you check back on the keynote and reviews in 2009, you'll see only the 32GB and 64GB models got an upgrade. The 8GB model was the same as the 2008 version.
