Well, that's not an option. Too many people would kill the reader by constantly draining the battery not to mention burn in. Your initial post was regarding the screen saver which refers to the image, not sleep mode.

Screen Saver & Sleep Mode are two entirely different things.

I think pretty much all electronic gagdets noways have some sort of sleep mode for a whole bunch of reasons. If not having that is important to you then you need to do research before you buy the item to make sure it works for your needs/wants.

It's to be sayed that constantly showing the 'standby picure' would not in any case drain the battery. Showing a constant screen content does consume zerro power.
The older readers doesn't have the ability to show e.g. the book-cover. With altering the software (PRS+) it's possible now (no battery drain of course). Even when the reader ist totaly switched off. It's a question of software.

Besides: There is no 'burn-in' effect on an EInk-display. Showing something on the screen does not consume power - no glowing of whatever - no 'burning'.

It's irrelevant wether the reader is in 'sleep-mode', in 'normal-mode' or switched off.

Above post is spot on , there is no burn in on eink and leaving the screen showing your last page isn't going to cause any problems or use any battery. If anything using the screensaver will waste some battery because it has to perform a few screen refreshes to do it.

Simple thing to remember is you are only using battery when you are changing pages (well as long as you have wifi off anyway).

Actually, showing a still image for long does create a sort of burn in, but it is a temporary one that is remedied by flashing white, black, white (which it automagically does as you've certainly noticed). Bingo.

If I understand the request correctly, what FinancialWar wants is not a No-Sleep mode but rather a "Sleep, no-notification" one. Can't see why that would be damaging in any way to the battery performance, but I'm not sure any of those is feasible unless someone highly skilled hacks right at the core of the Android system.

That's just artifacting not burn in and it will happen regardless even if the screen is only on the page for a few seconds (a screen refresh should clear it but sometime it takes two). It's more noticeable with pictures and if anything it's another strike against the screensaver rather than for it.

I think basicly what he wants is just to be able to set the device down and pick it up later at the page he was at as that's how I personally imagined eink readers would work before I bought one.

But like I said the screensaver grew on me it I just think it should just be optional that's all.

To have NO screen-saver (or better: to have the choice to have none) is one of the points I use my PRS350 and not a T1. When (automatically) switching it into power-saving-mode the screen-content remains. That gives a 'calm-down' reading experience.

But it should be a question of altering the software of the reader to make that possible.

I think the "book cover as a screen saver image" is an essential feature of my PRS-T1 - it helps to convey the impression of actually holding a book, not a mere electronic device for text display. I do like my content to be held beneath a nicely done cover (the same with music CDs), albeit admittedly being limited to a grayscale version when displayed with current eInk technology. I do feel like the cover, if well done, is like a perpetual invitation to discover the world hidden beneath .

As a matter of fact, I actually am quite disappointed when publishers do not include a nice book cover in their ebooks. Most recently, I considered the athmospheric paperback covers of the first two entries (and most probably the later ones, too?) of the "Ladies' detective agency" series (by Alexander McCall Smith) to be sorely missing from the epubs I bought. When picking up my PRS-T1 to continue reading, I am just presented with the bleak image of the book's title printed in large letters in black on white.

I would even consider to include the ability to show the book cover in standby mode as one of my personal must-have features when prompted to consider buying a new reader, it so enriches the experience.

It's not too difficult to add a cover using either Calibre or Sigil.

I happen to like the screen saver once the ereader is sent to sleep. It mimics closing a dead tree book after a reading session.

You could also have it go blank to know it's in sleep or off.

True, but you still have to press the power button to wake it. Might as well have something interesting on the screen when it's in sleep mode.

What an interesting thread!

Actually I was surprised Sony didn't include this option and I expected that to be one of the most basic things for an eReader (ever since I first dreamed of buying one). I guess technology advanced too far and displaying the last page that was being read is no longer an option... I agree that "screen saver" is not the best term though.

Anyway, it would really be trivial for Sony to include 4 options for sleep mode: blank screen, last page, book cover, custom image. It would have made no difference as far as battery drain goes. And it would keep everyone happy. Together with the "Show Message" option enabled, even the annoyance (of not being aware the device is asleep while having the last page displayed) would be avoided.

It's probably pointless discussing this any further since Sony didn't included this option, and unfortunately, it's probably something too complex to implement by hacking the firmware...
