Ultimately what will tell is sales numbers. I'll throw my guess in and say that Apple will sell more than 5 million iPads worldwide between March 16th and the end of March. I think that is a relatively modest target, and a major success would be more like 7+ million. (Assuming that they have manufactured enough to meet those numbers.) Unless the BOM is hugely higher than the iPad2's BOM was at release time, Apple was making something on the order of $200 for each iPad 2 sold when they released last spring. I'd imagine the BOM has dropped by at least 10-30% by this point with their economies of scale. So even on a base Wifi version of the 3rd generation iPad, I bet they are making at LEAST $100 per unit and probably more like $150 per unit initially and it'll probably creep up by another $40-100 over the course of its, expected, 1 year production run before the 4th generation iPad comes out. I am interested in the iPad gen 3...but not enough to replace my iPad 2. It just isn't significantly improved enough with all my other financial commitments to drop $600-700 on. It would be more because with that high def screen, I'd be loading at least 720p movies on there, which is going to take up enough extra space that the 16GB girl I've got going on now wouldn't be able to cope with much, especially for longer trips away from home. That plus a $100 applecare plus (I've got young kids, it is a miracle to me that they or my wife and I have not broken my ipad or her ipad yet). Figure in at best maybe getting $300 for my iPad 2 16GB Wifi now that the price dropped $100 on new ones and it would probably be roughly $400 to upgrade. Just too much for a much nicer screen (and the iPad2's screen is really nice, if not nearly as high resolution). Maybe/probably next year with hopefully a lower power Wifi stack and processor with significant processing power upgrades, maybe even better GPU and hopefully lower power consumption either giving longer battery life or allowing Apple to put a smaller capacity battery in the iPad leading to dropping the size and weight more than the new one. |

I have the knowledge to install Linux on any modern PC. However, I was limited on the amount of commercial and useful software I can run on Linux. I still prefer Ubuntu, but as a commercial operating system, Mac Os is better than Windows and 2nd after Ubnutu. Of course, that's my opinion, but it is coming from someone with several Microsoft Certs already passed .... I can't find or install MacOs (legally) on any other laptop. Plus the look and elegance is unique. No one can't deny that when buying a product, we also want something elegant and nice, that's part of the whole deal. Now, this can or cannot be a solid argument to you or others, but the most technical people I know at work (and some famous hackers out there) use Mac products. Reason being? it's Unix roots, which you get out of the box. ** DISCLAIMER ** I do not run or use PC Games ;-) ... I use my PlayStation for that. So I do not need a PC. Ubuntu as a tablet OS would run circles around the current android distro. Just my opinion. They always seem to do such an amazing job & the software works wonderfully on most any type of hardware. I wish google would work at it like Ubuntu does. I would consider an Ubuntu tablet in a heart beat. I would also say that the current Ubuntu version is elegant & beautiful.

Let me clarify. Apple is not dying. Apple is not going broke. I never said that. Apple is merely showing that it is only another big manufacturer that has had a hell of a good run, but the charge is over, the great ideas are not still coming out. This iPad (3?) shows that. We have now had a lack luster iPhone and now a so so iPad. Two Apple mystique disappointments in a row. People are asking "what is going on?" The luster is not as shiny as it was, and should decrease further. But Apple lovers need not despair, their money is still good, they will still be able to buy Apples, but those pesky Apple doubters will grow even more annoying. |

Link Edit: Before I get hammered for my comment, here's what I mean: many people do not talk about "tablets", but talk about "iPads"; when they go to buy a "tablet", they say "iPad" because they do not know better - it's a trend that will be very difficult to overturn.
