PRS + BENEFITS ?

I'm Mr TechDunce, but I keep seeing PRS+ mentioned and would like a brief low-down on the benefits, and, probably more important, could a dummy cope with installing it, and using it ?!

That's if it's desirable, that is.

And I won't be offended if you tap me on head and say "there there, go away and play with the kids...".

The biggest advantage to PRS+ is being able to use your own fonts usually without having to convert the book. If the book has embedded fonts, sometimes that can be stubborn to override, but I've really not run into many books where just changing the .css file on the reader didn't change the font. You create a .css file for each font you want on the reader and just switch the font by changing which .css file is used.

There are many other optimizations also. You can assign what functions you want to which keys and a 2nd function for keys when you hold them down, take screenshots of any page or menu. You can change what is displayed on the homepage, browse your books by folders, change how the page numbering is displayed while you read, change whether you tap or swipe to change pages (not a biggy for me, I love original swiping, but others love that option), show percentage of book read, the possibilities are really too numerous to mention, I'm sure others will post with their favorite features.

And it's now incredibly easy to install. Just download the correct version for your reader, unzip it, plug in your reader to the USB cable, double click the setup.exe file and you're done in about 2 minutes, and that's all there is to it. If you have a Mac though, the first time you install it must be done on a Windows sytem. After that you can update other version on the Mac.

Just do it, you'll wonder how you lived without it all this time once you see all the options. For myself, if the only feature was being able to change the fonts though, I'd still be thrilled with it.

Oh there's games also now, which I don't play much, but another option.

And if you go play with the kids, you'll see they've all installed PRS+ on their readers too because it's that easy and has that many great features!

Apart from fonts I also appreciate the option to choose between several different ways to turn pages. Most of the time I use "tap anywhere on page" so I can hold my 950 many different ways.

Installing PRS+ it unbelievably easy. Unisntalling equally easy, should you want to.
There are several other beneftits to PRS+, but fonts and tapping are the ones I use.

I bought a T1, but I sold it yesterday because I wanted the features of PRS+, but I'm not really into rooting and tweaking systems.

Super easy to install! And the amount of customization it allows is amazing!! I love using different fonts for books! I love being able to see the clock when reading--and love all the touch gestures customization that version 2.1 provides.

Does this mean that, assuming you created a .css file for 3 different fonts, you can change to any of those 3 fonts while you are reading, without plugging the ereader into your PC?

Is there a step-by-step guide for creating the .css files and how to switch fonts while using the reader? I currently convert each book using the "extra css" option in Calibre. This works fine but if I wanted to change the font, I would have to re-convert and re-download the books to the reader. I like the idea of being able to change font, such as to a serif font if I am in a serif mood, while reading.

I appreciate those of you who know what you are doing helping those of us who don't.

Beside the info in Ana Mardolls Blog, please note that there is a keybindable-action in PRS+ (something like "EPUB userstyle") (Goto Settings -> PRS+Settings -> keybindings (maybe located on page 2))
With this action bound to, lets say volume-down, a list with all available CSS files will be shown.
With PRS+2.0.18 (stable) you will have to open another book and change back to the book you are reading, to get the new CSS applied.
With PRS+2.1.01a / or nightlies form Analogus site, the change will be applied in an instant.

I also really like the clock display on the status bar - you can check the time at a glance whilst reading.

Nope. Doesn't work on Android (for now,). However, I do believe the developers want to port it to the T1 eventually.

Talking Ooops - or p'raps not ?

Bit off-topic, I know, but I just accidentally came up with a nice description when replying to someone quickly, when talking about Sony "ebook management systems" - softjunk.

I'll be so sorry if anyone thought of it before - it sprang, fully formed, as 'twere, from my fingers........

Thank you giododa and Mark Nord for helping me get font changing set up on my 505. Here are the steps I used to bind a key for font changes while reading (requires PRS+ alpha, see above). In this example, I set the number 0 to the keybind but I think you can use any key:

Settings
PRS+ Settings
Key Bindings
Numeric Buttons (or choose any button you prefer)
0 (or choose any button you prefer)
When Reading Book
Book
User EPUB Style (CSS File)

It is nice to be able to change fonts if I feel like it!

That's correct. You can have 4 dozen different fonts if you like. Initially you'll have to connect to your computer to load the various fonts and the .css files, but after that, you change the font on the reader by going into PRS+ Options, Book Viewer, User EPUB Style (CSS File), and select your font. If you're currently reading a book, to get that one to change you'll have to open any other book briefly, and then reopen the book you're reading, to force the reader to create a new .css file for the book.

And someone already pointed you to a great guide above.
