Apparently, the very busy service from Ectaco is for the work and has indicated what could be a new version of firmware: http://images.jetbook.net/upgrade/jbc/r1128
/ jbcupdate.bin
When the download and try, I will comment if there is now support for Spanish and English.

I will not be a bad idea, but maybe they were wrong yesterday and hung the English-Russian.

When the download and try, as we speak.

As we say in my city: "The rush is never good"

Mine's red too - no way of changing colour, thickness etc. I wonder how yours is black?

Mine won't update from that one - it looks like it thinks it already has that firmware version on board. Very annoying - English/Spanish was perfect for me as we often holiday in the Canary Islands where they speak Spanish.

Subject: Jetbook Color - Support request for downloaded firmware

Dear Ectaco Support,
I download the lastes Jetbook Color Firmware following the instructions
written in your e-mail.
I successfully upgraded my device but The firmware seems speack in
Russian-English rather than ENG-SPA. All menus was in cyrillic and I managed
to change the language in English.
Also I found severl documents in "My Documents" in russian.
I then click on "Device Info" under the menu "Settings" and I saw something
like "Firmware Russian v. 1115"

The downloaded filesize
(http://images.jetbook.net/upgrade/jb.../jbcupdate.bin) is about
1.4GB.

I made some mistake? I should download another file?

Thank you for your support

Yours faithfully,

Mr. Angelo ******

Please feel free to download the complete user's guide at

Thank you.
Ok, my english is not so good. But didn't I explain myself clear enough or the support didn't read my email at all?

So I told myself.

¿You found the manual ..? In this site I have not seen ...

And when I said I was done .... since yesterday, gave me the new download address that does not work when tested.

I think this family is a little lost ....

Not to criticize, is to refer.

I'll just let them get their act together until they make an official FW update link. for now it seems they're bringing the FW link online and offline to save bandwidth...

I find the scribbling feature reasonably functional. While writing you have to press quite hard to make sure most of the gestures are recognized.

Some things i found problematic:

1) Even if you press hard sometimes the device ceases to respond for a second and thus misses some strokes. Maybe the processor is not able to keep up? I've heard there was such an issue with the EEE Note which was later resolved somehow.

2) If you turn the device on its side ("landscape mode") there is a significant distance between the point of input and output on the screen with a "upward bias". Maybe bad calibration?

3) You cannot change when the scribbles are being saved to the "table of contents". The process of saving could result in a break in the flow of ones work.

4) no integration of the scribbles in the PDF itself (a feature existing on the ONYX M92)

What i see as a positive thing is that at least most of the gestures are recognized provided you apply enough pressure and rewrite the letters missed during the short freezes I mentioned in 1).

If these issues are addressed, this would become quite some device

I'm analyzing the JBC's scribblet files format to implement an plugin for my project named "jCrossSketch". If I succeed, I can convert it in SVG and in Jarnal file format. That's means I can use Jarnal to see PDF+hand writed notes on my PC and generate a unique PDF. I can also use all software of iLiad like the handwriting-to-text (myScriptNotes) and all 3d party software developed for iliad like "Iliad Java Scribble Merger"

I do not know if reverse engineering is legal...

Here's a Python script to create a very simple scribble file with a diagonal line from top right to bottom left. The coordinate origin on the page is at the top left - x increases across the page from left to right and y increases down the page from top to bottom. I've put a few comments in which should show what's going on.

Code:
from io import FileIO
from array import array

of=FileIO('1', 'w')

# Header
of.write(array('B', [0x0c, 0x04, 0x40, 0x06]))

# New linestring - each new linestring starts with this
of.write(array('B', [0xff, 0xff, 0xff, 0xff,     0x00]))

# 1st coord pair - loX, hiX, loY, hiY, 0x00
of.write(array('B', [0xae, 0x04, 0x00, 0x00,     0x00]))

# 2nd coord pair - loX, hiX, loY, hiY, 0x00
of.write(array('B', [0x00, 0x00, 0x32, 0x06,     0x00]))

# You can have as many coordinate pairs as you like in a linestring (>=2)
# Next linestring would start with [0xff, 0xff, 0xff, 0xff, 0x00] again

of.close()
Edited to add: As this will probably generate some interest I'll start a new topic with this code.

Andrew

Hi guys,

I'm reading this thread from first posts and I'm experiencing some kind of "deja-vu"... I've read this kind of stories with iRex (iLiad and DR1000) and with Pocketbook... Firmware not finished, future promises not fully met in the end or completelly not met...

I had bad experiences with DR1000 and with my Pocketbook 903 and I do not recomend to purchase this product until firmware will be finished.

My two cents.

Yeah, iRex went bankrupt for a very particular story. I hope Ectato will be more wise

Here's how you can easily notice the first issue i mentioned earlier:

Every 8 seconds or so of continuous scribbling the device ceases to respond for a second and thus misses some strokes. If you try to draw a continuous line (for example zig-zagging ) without lifting the stylus from the screen, at some point the device would freeze for a moment and then would connect the point where the stylus was before the freeze with the point after the freeze with a straight line.

I hope Ectaco are able to resolve this
