I just got a new replacement Kindle 3 (keyboard) directly from Amazon. Software version 3.3 (611680021). I tried to install the most recent jailbreak and screensaver hack, per the MobileRead Wiki, but have had no luck getting it to work.
I purchased 2 Kindle 3 devices when they were first available and installed the screensaver hack immediately on both of them. No problems with them, even as Amazon issued software updates. My old Kindle is at the same software version as the new one and was running the older versions of the hacks just fine. Is it possible that Amazon has found a way to lock out Jailbreak v10 & Screensaver v25? Thanks in advance! I really want to look at pictures of my cat instead of dead authors. :-) Kirsten |

Edit: Problem solved. I created the file "reboot" in linkfonts, and allowed the system to autoreboot the framework after disconnecting. This fixed everything.
Original Post: I followed the instructions for jailbreaking a K3 wifi and fonthack. Maybe I used a wrong file somewhere. But after both installs were successful, when I startup now, the entire screen is blank, except for part of the top bar (the top left spinning icon). I can still access USB on the computer, and the screen saver still works when off. Are there any suggestions as to how to fix this? I tried resetting it (by holding power) but it didn't work. Thanks! I have a UK wifi K3, I installed the root hack, then ss 0.25. I copied some PNG files to the correct directory, I created a reboot file, and a random file, and disconnected - it restarted the framework OK. If I flick the slider - great a picture is displayed. If I flick it again, another one. However if I leave it - the screensaver doesn't initialise at all (I left it for ~half hour by mistake and then noticed the screen saver wasn't on when I went back to it.
Also if I force the screensaver on by flicking the switch, it never shuffles - it just stays on the first picture. I read about creating a shuffle file - but the same - when initiated via the switch it doesn't seem to shuffle. Anyone any ideas? How long is the timeout before the screen saver should activate? Is this adjustable? How long is a picture displayed before shuffling to the next? Thanks |

Hello everyone
![]() Does anyone have a recommended set of fonts/pack that improves on the default Kindle 3 fonts? Just jailbroke, and installed the font hack on my device. I'm currently using the Amasis Monotype font, but I only have it for actual book reading - It was posted earlier in this topic on its own (Amasis Monotype for Kindle_book_text_only_file.zip). Thanks |

@alfa145:
Unless you tweaked something else, (ie. the timeout manually, or disabled the screensavers via the private command), that shouldn't happen. Make sure you don't have any borken images/non-image files in the screensavers directory, and reboot your Kindle. Also, it won't shuffle while sleeping, that's normal. |

Newbie JB/SS Question
Sorry...I have read for hours...no results.
I have K3g, US, ver 3.3, so installed: update_jailbreak_0.10.N_k3g-3.2.1_install.bin (and update_ss_0.25.N_k3g_install.bin) per the following instructions: Note for Kindle >= 3.2.1 Users: Please use the file corresponding to your kindle model suffixed by -3.2.1, the other one won't work on these newer FW versions, while the -3.2.1 file won't work on older FW versions... Installations went well but old screensavers still there. Thought I had perhaps installed wrong JB but cannot find uninstall.bin for 3.2.1. anywhere. Should I have maybe started with update_jailbreak_0.5.1_k3g_install.bin? Could unpacking with 7-zip have caused a problem? Now I am stuck. Know factory default reset will not remove what I must have done incorrectly. Please ![]() Last edited by sophiemom; 02-21-2012 at 09:31 AM. Reason: add 7-zip question |

@wallcraft
Thank you, but I am still stuck with old screensavers. Per your suggestion, I reinstalled update_ss_0.25.N_k3g_install.bin and added new ss's to screensavers file. I ran the update and then a restart, for good measure. No problems or errors but the old Amazon SS's are still coming up. I downloaded with Opera and unpacked first JB and SS hack with 7-zip, then with winRar. The newly added ss's happen to be .jpg. The test ss installed by ss hack is .png. It is on the Kindle and I can view it with Explorer. Any additional recommendations would be more than appreciated. Many thanks! |

Problem solved! After multiple reinstalls, changed to Firefox browser for downloads. Re-installed JB and SS. All seems to be AOK now. Thanks for your post, wallcraft! Alas!

White? or Black? Which one will give more life to the screen?
Hello,
The screen saver is to protect the screen from what used to happen in old CRT screen, where the electrons beam struck always the same phosphor point, resulting in permanent damage. My question is if e-Ink screen have similar problem, should the images be mostly white? or black? Which one will give more life to the screen? |

Hi Jmesar,
actually the word "screensaver" is not completely correct when it comes to ebook readers with E-Ink displays. There is NO burn-in issue with E-Ink. Screensavers are purely ornamental, they do not really "save" the screen from anything. Just pick the ones you prefer from one of many dedicated websites (that of course includes mine ![]() Bye bye! |

Hello everyone,
I just got my first Kindle. I am not sure what model it is, but I paid $79 for it, is has 5 buttons at the bottom, WiFi only, and the Version is 4.0. I would love to be able to add a Russian keyboard. Could someone please steer me in the right direction? I am not sure which hack (file) to install. Any help is greatly appreciated. |
