PRS-350 PRS-350 at sony store for $69.99 (refurbished)

Part of me wishes I'd picked up a T-1 in time. The other part knows I'd feel foolish if I had, since I already own a 350, 950 and Kindle Keyboard.

My inadequate excuse for owning so many eReaders already is that each is a different size: 350 for travel, 950 for doing public readings, KK for home.

I don't even have such an excuse. I've got 2 silver PRS-350's and 1 pink PRS-350. Reason I want another is I want to start messing around with PRS+ code and don't want to risk bricking my beloved readers.

Won't be the end of the known universe if you brick one of the silvers, will it? Besides, I haven't read about anyone who bricked their 350 and wasn't able to get it back to stock eventually.

What I'd dread is having to find a case. That was the hardest thing to replace after my first 350 got stolen.

The choice as I see it is this: Wait for the next lit-friendly innovation in screen tech (or the next iteration of readers) or assume the T1 is the last device of its kind to favor giving the most amount of control to the owner with the latest level of tech. If you feel that the T1 is the end, then I'd say to pick one up. If not, I'd rather wait -- especially since ePub 2.0 compatibility isn't certain.

Nah, love my 350's too much to risk it, particularly with all the extras that PRS+ brings. Pre-compiled PRS+ binaries or a direct compile of nightlies tend to be quite stable so not much chance of bricking with those. However, I'll be messing around with the source code and given my general lack of coding skills, I might change something that'll cause my 350 to brick.

I'm not interested in the T1. What I want is another PRS-350, although I'd certainly love to have a PRS-650 if I can find one for a good price.

I got a brand new 350 for $129 from eBay shortly after the T-1 came out. I checked out the T-1 and realized there was nothing about it that I liked so opted to hunt down the sure thing I loved as my spare instead and I'm very happy I did.

Some people are charging a LOT for the 350s and 650s, but there are still new 350s out there for the $129 price, and some refurbished for less if you just keep checking.

When I originally bought my first 350 in January 2011, I also got the Sony covers shortly afterwards, both with and without a light, so my spare reader even has a good cover.

Of course I'd buy a 3rd 350 if I found one reasonably priced in blue, I'd still kill for that.

Don't be afraid, the internal memory of my 350 has been formatted a couple of times, but no brick

I'm not afraid of installing custom firmware. I've got PRS+ nightlies installed on two of my PRS-350's (currently on rev8 post-reset, latest revision is 10 as of 2 hrs ago, 2.1.00alpha is rev7) and Analogus' build on another.

However, if I start messing with the source code, knowing my luck, I might disable USB mass storage or something and if the reader gets borked, then I'd have no way of reformatting or reverting to a more stable firmware.

I was not talking about installing, I was talking about modifying the software I don't install the releases or nightly builds, but I compile the source and create my releases

PRS+ doesn't really have nightly builds - I compile from source, too. Hmm, curious, what modifications have you done? The only customization I've done so far is to change icons. I haven't touched the scripts just yet.

I haven't change icons, I'm not good with design. In my case, I've parsed the way I send my files to the device to get the series and I draw series instead of progress. I'm toying around for changing the info screen, but I'm not putting a lot on effort in it after a couple of crash, I must confess.

Go ahead, change the scripts, build your own custom-installer, or even better, use a bata-pack. Run "ant build.beta" in /build/ folder.
Copy /Beta/ to IM of your Reader.

"Installed" PRS+ mod's are integrated via mount --bind so actually no risky flashing at all, and if anything goes wrong, namely a missformated main.xml or something like that, there is "Safe-Mode". Which will be entered when the Reader is started connected to USB.
Under this condition PRS+ will not be loaded, and you will get first into data-transfer-mode, to fix up things, and after disconnect, the unalterd Sony-UI will start.

Bricking the 350:

My experience goes like that:

It's inpossible to brick the reader with PRS+ or PRS+ custom builds. My knowledge in programming is low (but rising;-) so I make a lot of mistakes in trying to alter PRS+. And do it very often. But never bricked the reader that way.

Altering the reader in making your own firmware and FLASHING the reader is HIGH RISK! But that has nothing to do with PRS+. I once did playing with flashing new firmware and I did brick the reader very soon.

What exactly is the difference between building a beta as opposed to doing a normal compile?

That's certainly very good to know! Need to brush up on my JavaScript, though, as my skills in that area are definitely lacking.
