Yes, it is true about the Penguin books. I just tried it for one....
Here is a snippet from an Amazon help page: Quote:

Well, the book was "Dauntless" by Jack Campbell. The publisher appears to be "Ace", which I don't know if it's part of Penguin or what....
As far as the person that says "just check it out in epub"......... IF IT HAD BEEN AVAILABLE IN EPUB I WOULD HAVE. Kindle format is way down the list of my choice. And although I probably explained it oddly, the REASON not being able to get the book means I don't buy the books is that the way I usually try new series I'm not familiar with is to get one (hopefully the FIRST one) and read it. If I like it, I usually buy the rest of the series so I have them when I'm in the mood to read 'em. Since I wasn't able to get the first one downloaded, I'm less likely to buy the rest - in this case not only because I couldn't try the first one but ALSO 'cause the publisher is a large, malodorous pile of excrement in my opinion and isn't going to get any money. I'm not too happy with Amazon either... |

OK, something's changed since yesterday... Where before, on Amazon there was the regular box that said "download book" or whatever, NOW there's a DIFFERENT BOX that says:
"Due to publisher restrictions, this book cannot be delivered wirelessly and must be downloaded and transferred via USB. You currently have no devices registered that support transferring via USB. " I can't select any of my "Kindle apps" and download. So, regardless of what the library entry for the download says, apparently Penguin - and I found a reference that the Lost Fleet series is indeed Penguin - has done their best to screw everybody that wants to try the series from the library. And I just confirmed they still don't list an epub version. I did find a whole bunch of sites that show the first book as a free epub download, but I presume they're actually pirate sites so I was reluctant to mess with them. |

I can recommend that series, by the way. It's good. Although I read it before I had an ereader. Quote:
However, if you did check it out as pdf you could read it on a PC using ADE. Not ideal, but possible. Most of my early Overdrive checkouts were pdfs I read on my laptop. I always got annoyed when I had to leave the laptop to, say, go to work or go to the bathroom ![]() |

IIRC you don't even have to root a nook color to get a decent pdf reader on it. As long as ADE recognizes it, a nook color ought to read a pdf just fine.

If it's similar to the original nook root, it should still have the original firmware as well sort of in a partition. I know ADE DRM recognizes this firmware. I don't know about the other apps being usable with a DRM'd pdf.

Yes, my Nook color is rooted, and I have a bunch of readers on it. Somewhere in the back of my mind was that as a tablet running Kindle, it would be regarded as a legitimate "Kindle", and thus avoid the <I'm running out of non-vulgar ways to describe what Penguin is doing> "limitation"... Apparently, NOT.
I FINALLY found the missing book - it IS in my cart, but it's NOT shown in the cart when you go through the section of Overdrive (at least at the FLP) where I'd normally see the book. I had to signed back in, and if I go through my account area, ALL my currently checked out books show up... Unfortunately, since as far as the library is concerned I've got the Kindle book, it won't let me switch and get the pdf. So, I CAN try to download again. But with the tablet not working, this whole thing makes even LESS sense than it did... It'd be like going to a gas station and being told, "No, you can't buy gas, we ONLY sell to people with Fords, and your car is a Buick." What exactly is Penguin trying to accomplish? Do they think pirates don't have a Kindle to steal a book with if they want? What's the goal of this bizarre (there, I found one last descriptive word) limitation? And, BTW, Y'all are killing me! QUIT telling me the series is good, 'cause now I REALLY want to read it and I can't because I'm so THOROUGHLY disgusted with Penguin that I'm absolutely NOT going to give them any money. I've already written the author to let him know, and once I find an email address for someone high enough to live in a room with a door (not some worthless, level 1 CSR) I'll send them a little note too. |

I think at this point your best bet to read/borrow is to return it and then place it on hold again, then when you get a chance, check it out as a pdf. Unless you want to buy an old broken kindle and use its PID as recommended above.
I actually own this series in dtb...I picked 'em up cheap when Borders was doing their going out of business 80% off sale... |

Just to clarify; Penguin ebooks can be read on Kindle apps, if there's a Kindle device on the account. |
