If we want a bigger selection of eBooks at the library, we need to band together to tell Overdrive to abide by their contract and if that means Kindle eBook lending via the library has to go, so be it. if Amazon really wants Overdrive library lending, then Amazon can help Overdrive setup servers that only Overdrive has access to without Amazon having any access. That's how to do it so it plays by the rules.

Personally, I would not mind Kindle library lending if it was controlled by Overdrive like the ePub lending is.

Well, yesterday I ran afoul of the Penguin/Kindle/Amazon problem.

I have a rooted Nook Color, on which I have the Kindle app. I also have it on my PC.

Requested a book from FLP and when it came in to Philadelphia, I only had the option of Kindle or pdf. So, SINCE I'VE LOADED A COUPLE DOZEN KINDLE BOOKS ONTO THE NOOK AND READ THEM WITHOUT PROBLEM, I picked the Kindle version. Got dumped over to Amazon and found out it had to be loaded by "USB"...

I had no idea this was going to screw things up this badly... Apparently you literally HAVE to have a physical Kindle reader - NOT the "free Kindle app" or a Nook tablet running Kindle - an actual reader. So far, the book thinks it's checked out from the library but I have found ABSOLUTELY no way to get it on either of my "readers"... I ORIGINALLY figured it was Penguin that was the cause of all this garbage. But now I'm starting to wonder if the stench goes all the way to Amazon since you can ONLY read these books by buying one of their readers.... And YES, IF IT HAD BEEN AVAILABLE IN EPUB I'D HAVE GOTTEN THE EPUB.

Annoying, to say the least.

The only recommendations I've ever gotten from Amazon have been based on what I've looked at on Amazon's website or purchased from Amazon. Not by any overdrive connection. And I have probably borrowed at least 50 books from the library through Overdrive/Amazon.

They don't even list my Overdrive loans in my browsing history, only on my Manage Your Kindle page. And since I delete those after I finish the book, there is no record there either.

If they were doing this or going to do this, would they not have done so with me by now?
If I run KindleForPC, hit the home button and then go to the archived items, I do see two expired eBooks there that I borrowed from the library. So Amazon may very well keep a record of what is borrowed. I am not sure if this is held by the software or by Amazon.

I think full disclosure on Overdrive's part would tell people that certain books need a kindle device as opposed to only the app. It appears once you download it for USB it gets into your archive, but there is no other way to get it into your archive.

Kindle and nook will both keep borrowed books in your library as expired loans until you remove them, with an option to purchase (although the only books B&N knows you borrowed are the ones borrowed using LendMe). The items can be deleted from your library, which I do once they expire. This is supposedly so you can track your own reading (I use goodreads for that).

I'm using an old version of KindleForPC. Do the newer 1.8.x versions allow deleting archived items?

As for nook keeping expired eBooks in the library, ADE does the same thing. But I know for sure that ADE just has a local copy and not one on a server someplace else. So that is not an issue. The nook's software, does it keep the library eBooks local or does it go and tell B&N about it?

You delete archived items by going to your Manage Your Kindle page on the Amazon website...

You have to delete them (as any archived item) from the "Manage My Kindle" library on the Amazon web site.

It stays on the B&N cloud. At least with the 1st gen. nook, you have to go to the "my nook library" on their website to delete it, same as Amazon.
