Well I depends on what will be done with annotations later on. It is obviously needed/good to have it in the text. But also it is good to be able to export just "clippings" of text and annotations, scribbling, etc. again in pdf. You may end up with 10 pages' extract from 500 pages' book, which may be very handy. If you'll need you may lookup the original text with notes otherwise you will work with much shorter extract.

Anyone comes to this from an irex DR1000s?

I am thinking on buy it as upgrade for pearl screen but I don't know if at that price will be a good option from the dr1000 looking as nice as it is this device at the moment.

first impressions

I have just bought M92 in order to replace my well-loved iRex iLiad v1 which served me well for many productive years (4 or 5, I believe), but its battery has finally died so I had to retire it.

I'm very happy with my new M92, and wanted to share my first impressions. But first, a quick note about what I wanted from it. My needs are mostly academic and simple. I wanted something that reads PDF-s easily (not too slow, good zooming options, good-sized screen) and that allows me to scribble on the text, merge the scribbles easily with the original PDF and export the merged file to the PC.

For this, M92 is perfect. I love the size of the screen which allows me to read a PDF even without the need for zoom it or rotate the screen (though, this is possible). I just crop the margins (which is one of the zooming functions), and that is fine. But, there are many other zooming options, so I'm set for that as well. Contrast of the screen is great as well, so thumbs up (my husband has Cybook for fiction reading, and while it's a good device in general, its contrast was poor compared to my iLiad - contrast on M92 is, I think, even better than on iLiad)

The scribble function (they call it "sketch") is fine as well, the stylus sensitivity is mostly ok (it could be more precise, but well, it's good enough). Merging scribbles/sketches with original pdf is easy - I just need to press "Merge sketch" and this creates another merged PDF which adds date and time to the file name and which is then easily copied to PC.

However, what I would like and which, as far as I can see, it's not possible right now is to have an option to replace the old PDF with the new merged one. So, when I press "Merge Sketch", there would be an option: "Create new file" or "Replace original file".

Also, a slight annoyance is that I don't see a way to change default options. So, every time I open a PDF, I need to set the "Crop Margin" function and put it into the Sketch mode. I would like to be able to make this a default for every PDF I open.

There is also an Annotate option, which is nice, but I don't really use it, since I prefer to scribble. It is my understanding that annotations cannot be merged and exported to PC. As I said, I don't really mind, as I prefer scribbling, but that would be a nice thing to have.

I have tried connecting to net and searching the Wikipedia, but that was too slow to be usable. However, I know this is not a tablet, I just wanted a simple no-frills ebook reader (and scribbler ) and I'm satisfied with this one.

Glad to hear you are happy with your purchase.
So far there were some very ethusiastic comments of users in this thread - shortly after unpacking and trying out the device - only to never have any comments after a week or so ...

@rai: I guess you are using the 1.6 firmware. Could you confirm?
Some of the minor problems you mentioned above are fixed in the new version.

I'm using the M92 for about three weeks. Bought it to read scanned books (with a Book2Net Public) and downloaded PDFs from scientific databases. Up until now i am very happy with the device. Already read a couple of books and papers and i have absolutly nothing to complain until now.

Sorry for the short comment, i'm in a hurry. Perhaps i have more time to write up my experience in the next week.

Yes, I'm using 1.6. I figured I'll wait a bit with 1.7 until some of the glitches others have mentioned are smoothed out

Yes, yes, yes, I have my beauty, thx a lot Booxtor! I am sooooo happy!
First impressions: a really, really great device, it is perfect for scientific reading and annotating (I am a university researcher for ancient cultures and also a manager in the telecom industry - so I read both classics and technology a lot).
My very first impression is that it is difficult to calibrate properly the pen, so now I update the firmware to 1.7 and see what happens.
Also, it is great that I tested and any screen protector foils can be used with the pen, so I am hurrying to a shop and buy a 9.7" screen protector foil.
Thx Booxtor and ereader-store.de again, you made my day!

Protective foil

Hmmm...I'm about to receive my device one of these days and have also considered the convenience of adding one.
My question is...How much will it contribute for more glare? Has anyone used protective foil in the device and can comment result? Also your experience about how easy the screen gets scratched...
Thanks for your advice.

In my opinion you don't really have to use any protective foil on an eink ereader. It is quite hard to scratch the screen (it is made of glass) and the foil don't secure your screen from breakage. But it makes it very reflective and the glare on it would be quite annoying.

I just received mine too!
Quite annoying to see the device sitting with Canada Post for almost a week! It took 3 days to arrive in Canada from US. After that Canada Customs hold the package for a couple of days (including the long weekend that just passed).

First impression: it is what I needed (size and look). More impressions in the next coming days. Thanks a lot Booxtor and JBaach for your reviews. Also many thanks to the JetBook Color owners who helped me to break the tie between these two devices. I hope to join your club later when the device becomes better and cheaper.

More about the cost in the dedicated thread for Onyxboox.com

Thanks for your advice, booxtor. In fact, I've never seen nobody with a foil in his eink reader, so it must not be a good idea. Unless you love glare and air bubbles in your screen

Hi PeterX!
Did you put your findings into the Wiki in the end? If so - how about linking them to the M92 article?
https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Boox_M92

I've started collecting tidbits of information and creating some documentation under the 'Related Wiki Links' section. It would be cool to bring a bit of organization to this mess ( ) of information hidden in a number of threads a new M92 owner like me needs to read.

Cheers!
