i think that hercule wins sherlock in a battle...
watson describes holmes like this
Knowledge of Literature – nil.
Knowledge of Philosophy – nil.
Knowledge of Astronomy – nil.
Knowledge of Politics – Feeble.
Knowledge of Botany – Variable. Well up in belladonna, opium and poisons generally. Knows nothing of practical gardening.
Knowledge of Geology – Practical, but limited. Tells at a glance different soils from each other. After walks, has shown me splashes upon his trousers, and told me by their colour and consistence in what part of London he had received them.
Knowledge of Chemistry – Profound.
Knowledge of Anatomy – Accurate, but unsystematic.
Knowledge of Sensational Literature – Immense. He appears to know every detail of every horror perpetrated in the century.
Plays the violin well.
Is an expert singlestick player, boxer and swordsman.
Has a good practical knowledge of British law.

when we look the partner of him, dr. watson, a wounded doctor from a ghazi bullet in afghanistan, he is curious about his homemate in baker street 221b, and he is used to show holmes' knowledge and geniusity to the readers,

and the other characters in his books are

lestrade and griegson : detectives of the Scotland Yard, in most cases they want help from Holmes
irene adler : the only woman who beats holmes with her intelligence
moriarty : the biggest enemy of the holmes, whole opposite of holmes, the consultant criminal
mycroft : the elder brother of holmes, he is working in intelligence service of united kingdom, and he is as smart as holmes

the books i can advise are

the study in scarlet
the sign of four
the hound of the baskervilles
I agree that Sherlock Holmes is one of, if not the best, detectives in literature. He's the only one (that I know) that actually gets mail from his readers as well. Of course his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also had a keen mind. He actually put the techniques that his character used into practice and solved a few real world mysteries.

I just restarted The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd, I read the first few chapters last month so now I'm going to finish it, hopefully tonight.

Speaking of Italy, I'm on the 5th of Andrea Camilleri's series set in Sicily, featuring Inspector Salvo Montalbano: Excursion to Tindari. I'm listening as audiobooks, and am sorry the series is agency priced by Penguin as ebooks, but the translation is totally outstanding!

True. Though I understand when Doyle wrote "The Final Problem" people were in an uproar too. One woman wrote him and called him a brute and men went round the streets wearing mourning bands on their arms. Both detectives are good reads when you are looking for an enjoyable mystery. As is Miss Marple. Of course the genre really gets its start wtih E.A. Poe though I don't think his mystery stories are as well known as the other two.

Poe's "Auguste Dupin" stories of the 1840s are certainly the first example of English detective fiction, but the first recognisably modern detective novel was Wilkie Collins's "The Moonstone", published in 1868. That introduced many of the elements which subsequently became standard for the genre: the English country house robbery, the professional investigator fighting against the incompetence of the bungling local police, a large number of false suspects, the reconstruction of the crime, and the final "twist in the tale".

some authors said that the dostoyevski's crime and punishment is the first detective story, but i think that the moonstone is the first one
and in my opinion auguste dupin is a good detective too
but my favourite is of course poirot

I'm about half way through The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd. So far it's very good, this one seems to flow exceedingly well.

Please DON'T give away the ending! This was the first book of its kind (you'll see what I mean when you finish it) and was the book that make Agatha Christie famous.

I read it in March last year. An excellent book. (I'm reading through all of Agatha Christie's mysteries, in publication order.)

It was also written at the suggestion of a lord or peer of the realm wasn't it? I mean the man (whose name I can't remember) suggested it to Agatha Christie rather than her coming up with it herself.

Yes, indeed. Lord Mountbatten, in fact.
