Would you......

First question:

If you'd manage to find an etext/file of THAT story/book you couldnt find in any library or bookstore anywhere, and was searching for it on the net for years-would you download it,even if the legality of the site hosting it would b questionable?

Be honest,guys.

So, you're talking about a book out of print and very hard to find? I guess I would, although it wouldn't be right. Just because the book isn't available, that doesn't mean it won't be in a near future or that the copyright owner hasn't plans for it in the future.

It's a tough call, but I would get it if I really wanted it.

I would, no question. However, I would also purchase a legal copy as soon as it came out. I've gone that route before (with music and the purchase of individual songs) and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Wouldn't one have to be at least marginally willing do copy it --- to have found it in the first place? You have to be searching for such a thing, to find it. Although you could have been searching for legal copies when you stumbled across a questionable copy, I guess.

Lobolover, are chumming hoping to snag people who will help you rationalize downloading pirated ebooks? I'm not taking that bait.

Yep .... that's exactly how it usually happens to me. I try to find the thing (book, music, whatever) can't find it at the store, so it's either make the thing myself -- or grab a pirated version. And, yes ... there are some books that I love enough that I've actually typed the whole damn thing so that I could carry it with me in digital format. Never tried to sell the copy to anyone ... so I guess that makes me a pirate without a purpose.

Arrrrgh, matey.

If I've already got a paper copy and am eager to get same on my e-reader, I might be tempted to scan/OCR/etc myself - but I'd have to be desperate considering the amount of work involved.
As to a net illegal - doubt it...

Yes.

With these provisos:

I contacted every possible person I could at the publisher, and was rebuffed.
I contacted the author, or tried to, and was a second time rebuffed or unanswered.

Another member posited that there is a certain illegality in charging people for the same content over and over again (e.g. LP, 8-Track, Cassette, CD, mp3) and whether we as consumers are fools to have done so.

Sadly, I can see that this could easily devolve into a useless debate about copyright, Digital Rights Management Software, and the alleged evils of Corporate culture.

LoboLover:

The truly odd thing about your post is that you move so quickly from searching for a physical copy to it jumping to a digital one. However, if a text is that important to you, go ahead and download it, then pledge $100 to the fascists at RIAA to quiet your conscience. ;-
