This (fit for purpose thing) is an EU rule so it should be possible but it might be more trouble than it is worth.

. . . and I love it!
In saying that let me make it quite clear I only want my Cybook as a book reader. Be honest, there are better products out there for music and photos.

Mine came out the box fully charged and I'd read Shogun and half of A Tale of Two Cities before it froze with a pretty checkerboard pattern. I spent a frantic few minutes trying all the buttons, and even the reset, before concluding it was a flat battery. Some sort of low battery warning would have helped.

Another minor problem I've encountered is an inability to re-sync edited books I created using MobiCreator. Solution? Just open up Explorer and drag'n'drop. Is that a bug or a lack of a feature? I don't know.

Is this a new behaviour with the newer model? I have never got a checkerboard pattern when the battery is flat.

Actually, The Gen 3 makes a really nice web comic reader.
I tend to download web comics I really like, and reread them when a major new story arc starts. Its also a good decompresser for when I wan t to read something, but am not in the mood for an actual book.

Anyway, if the comic is in black and white, it look great on the Gen3's screen. even colour comics are rendered nicely. The advantage with web comics is that they are not usually bigger then the Gen3's screen and as such can be viewed well.

The only problem is having to view the as individual Gif's or Jpeg's.

I've tried to compile images in different ways, using the Manga2Ereader software and Mobipocket Creator. The two best results were M2E -> PDF + MC = PRC or simply M2E -> PDF.

The test sample was a comic chapter (maybe 20 pages? I don't recall). Final file size was less than 1,5MB (5Mb in the case of a final PDF file).

I Guess while we wait for the nest firmware release, this could be a good way to view comics, web comics, manga, etc.

The problem with PDF is that with the few firmware, it just crashes or shows a blank page for most PDF's especially larger ones.

I've used JE Comics to generate a few pdf's using the Sony Pre-sets, but the flaky PDF support kind of defeats that.

Does the Manga2Ebook reader require going into the command line? Because I usually try to avoid that.

So agree that waiting for the new firmware with the support for zip archives is the best option. any idea as to when the next major revision is going to come out?

Actually, those two options I've mentioned displayed very well in a Cybook. Other combinations would display glitches, like the one you mentioned (a blank page for every picture one).

Manga2Ereader has a GUI and is fairly easy and straight forward to use. One good thing is that a proper sized PDF is generated. And if you convert that PDF file to PRC format with the Mobipocket Creator, it exctract the resized pictures and compiles them in a single file.

Will try out Manga2Ereader later this week when I have little bit of time to experiment.

The problem I have with converting PDF's to Mobi is that you can no longer switch the page into Landscape mode, so If you haven't already split the page in the PDF you are stuck with the orientation that you use when creating the file, if it is just images.

And in some comic strips, you just want the sunday strip to be bigger, so can;t really be automate it.

Also, I have a Sony PRS-500, so PDF means that I only have to create one file for both , something that means one less headache for me.

I've created an HTML file with just the <IMG> tags for early Garfield strips (which can, or could, be downloaded from ucomics.com), and then converted the HTML to PRC with mobiperl. It worked like a charm. The only downside is the images have to be GIF or JPG, no PNG (which would me more efficient).

Couldn't you create a Mobi book from your comics rather than a PDF? It would be far more "stable" on the Gen3 that way; or is the problem a lack of suitable tools?

The sample chapter I've used was all in PNG format.
Did you create the HTML file automaticaly or manually? Did the Cybook fit every strip to the screen, or did you have to constantly scroll?

On my other thread, we (me and Joerg_Mosthaf) tried the direct route: images compiled directly into a Mobi ebook. Result: Blank page after each image.

Take a look at that thread, to check out the experiment. (Note, I've deleted the sample files in there, only the M2E link is working now)

I Did try but was not very happy with the result.

The Gen3 would not let me change the orientation of the book to landscape, for a few of the larger sunday comics.

Also was having Trouble getting Creator to sort the image files by Name.

Could do what Over suggested that I go from Image to Pdf to prc.

Now that I've finshed my exams, should have a little time to experiment.
