Glen, Dickens did not need any of those in his time. It was only his health which prevented him from making millions and millions. The money he did earn was I believe the equivolent to a few million today, but his outgoings were enormous, which included a wife who, although done nicely I think, was paid to keep quiet about his fancy lady in later life.

It may also be a result of your living in the UK? There was no real news around here (Indiana) relating to Dickens' birthday. In any case, happy birthday Charles Dickens!

I'm not in the UK, but I knew something about Dickens was up because there were so many threads about him this past week.

Dickens 10 Greatest Novels according to Time Magazine

Mad For Dickens?

Dickens Greatest Novels - A Poll

Charles Dickens (This one.)

I don't think I've ever noticed so many threads at one time dedicated to Dickens before!

I'm in Italy and, sadly, I was entirely unaware of the bicentennial.

Currently reading this article. I had to buy the mag because its kinda of hard to get at the library. Couldn't wait.

Can anyone recommend a good biography on Dickens. That article leaves me wanting more.

I celebrated Dickens birthday by buying the Delphi collection of his works. They seem to have done a great job. I might be buying more of their collections. I just wish there were page numbers.

I was going to reread Tale of Two Cities, but decided on Great Expectations. The excerpt we read in 9th grade really helped turn me on to reading. Not to mention getting me out of the basics.

Dickens wasn't that keen on the US either. It seems to have been that old issue - Copyright. He rather felt that he should have been paid something for his books by American consumers and said so on his first trip to the US. The American public opinion whipped up by the press was that he should be grateful that he was being read and that expecting payment was pure greed. Dickens' resulting disillusionment comes over loud and clear in American Notes and Martin Chuzzlewit.

I was looking at that book, but 20$ for an ebook ! There were not a lot of reviews and they were a bit mixed for that price. Thanks for the review.
