Me .... don't know how much use I'll get out of Whispernet ... that will be interesting to see. But, there is this dear elderly lady who lives near me, and she loves to read, but doesn't know the first thing about computers ... and doesn't want to. I'm going to do a hard sell to her family about getting her a Kindle for her birthday because Whispernet is simply made for her. She has trouble getting out to the library these days (which is a half an hour drive one way) and mostly what she does is sit at home and ... read. I'm downloading a lot of things to take to her in CD format, where I can then stick it on her daughter in law's computer and from there on to her Kindle (assuming they get her one ... but I bet they will). I do hope that Woody's list doesn't go away entirely, however, because it would be nice for her to access books from here directly. She wouldn't be the type to abuse it, and she's not going to be sharing the information with all her other geriatric shut in friends. ![]() |

There are other ways to get ebooks to her. If you want to send here an ebook, email it to her @kindle.com and it will be sent to her Kindle.

And, when my sister got her Kindle, I put 250 files (probably 400 books in total) onto a small SD card and mailed it to her. You could simply load up the card and insert it into the lady's Kindle for her. As I said, I've been downloading books from various places, so it was easy for me to simply drag the books that I thought my sister would like to read -- and some I wasn't sure of but just thought she should have, like the Harvard Classics -- directly on the SD card. The 1G SD card cost me $12.50 at Best Buy, and I already had a USB adapter for it since my digital camera uses SD cards.

Won't she get dinged ten cents every time I do that?? I'm planning on sending her a boat load of books, as many as she would like to have, but I don't like the idea of literally nicking and dimeing her to death.

Just make sure that you set up the file structure the same on the SD card as it is on the Kindle. All the ebooks need to be placed in a folder titled documents so that the Kindle can find them.

To make sure that the directories were properly created, I put the brand-new SD card into my Kindle, then removed it. The Kindle had created the required directories, and I then populated the /documents directory with the books I had downloaded. I also created a spread sheet listing every file on the SD card, the title and author, and where I had downloaded it from. The "where" was really easy to supply since I download into a directory structure based on the name of the sites.

I keep spreadsheets not only for my ebooks, but also for my DVDs and CDs. Those sheets I keep on my PDA. The first time I purchased a DVD I already had at home, I knew the collection was getting out of control and I needed to keep something with me when I shopped. ![]() |

should be called....
"E-book for Dummies" Because, folks, I am not the brightest bulb in the box. I've had mine now since last Thursday, and I gotta tell you, I am so thrilled. I have actually managed to figure out most of what I need to know in downloading free books. Buying from Amazon, of course, is the easiest way.....no brainer there. However, after spending the $359 plus an extra battery 'just in case', I figured I'd better get as much on there for free as I could. Through this forum and the amazon kindle forum, and lots of experimentation and a few battery recharges, I now have the feedbook catalog on my kindle home page....and www.mnybks.net on the kindle browser......and finally realized I had to download the mobibook reader to my laptop before I could download any books to the laptop.....that took me a while to figure out......then when I tried sending the books I had downloaded to my laptop to my kindle, even tho it said "sent to your kindle" I didn't realize I had to go to my e drive and email from there to my kindle account.........Normally, I would just search the manybooks.com site, write down the download numbers, and then download those directly thru the kindle....but wanted to know about different ways I had heard...whew! A big thank you to all the help I've found on here and other places. And to Rick, thanks for your offer!

Woody's list creation without getting "permission" is unfortunate, however it wasn't malicious by any stretch. If I would have had any idea this would have been an issue with Mobileread I would have stopped it. However, the only person I see "upset" is Nate. I've asked Nate to have the Domain owner contact me in an attempt at an amicable solution, but I suspect Nate doesn't want the owner to see the nastygrams he tried to post on KK (oh.. and the advertisement to join this forum immediately afterwards.. very tacky Nate). I find it interesting I can download all the stuff off this site without even logging in and yet Nate is hurt because "he dosen't know who is downloading". It's prolly an IP thing.
And Elsi.. you mean it bugs you that you didn't read on KK that those links were courtesy of this sacred site? Does it bug you, per chance, Elsi, that you posted an excerpt from a Yahoo Group which is a violation of Yahoo's TOS without the author/group owner's permission? Well, you won't have to worry about that anymore. Or how about Nate's frustration about all the "hoarding" costing them money when they openly promote theft of an author's hard earned cash by modifying PID's and defeating DRM? ./scratchhead profusely In the same light as above, I've written a nice little routine that will batch download (both PC and Kindle.. working on Mac) practically every e-thingie on this site and am disseminating it as I type. I mean, seriously, whats the difference between Mobileread showing folks how to get books for free whilst denying the author their livelyhood and us downloading Mobileread stuff without regard to Mobileread's cost? Perhaps Mobileread should modify their site so a login is required to download. Welcome to the cutthroat world of e-crap Mobileread... everything was fine as long as it was the other guy that was getting cheated. What comes around, goes around. Quote:

Oh your welcome. I figure if one old lady can't offer to help another, then what is the world coming to??
Mine comes tomorrow!!! I'm a serious computer geek and have been since I was in my mid 30s, so I'm hoping the learning curve will be close to flat for me. I'm the one in my neighborhood that gets the phone call that "my computer is dead" or "my network isn't networking" ... and I go over and fix it. I also take care of "my CD player isn't working" and "my cell phone is broken" ... stuff like that. Side story, when I moved here, I had the house wired for my network. Sixteen nodes set all through the house. Yes, I know there's wireless ... I'm just a fan of wired nets. So, I get moved in ... and the network isn't working. I pulled all the connections out of the wall, and found out that the electrician who wired it didn't understand about the color coding system for the connections. He had brown hooked up to blue and orange to brown. Just whatever took his fancy. Had to get out my punchdown kit and redo the entire thing. Ahhhhh .... good times. |

2. Many people spend a great deal of time formating and converting them. What's the problem with acknowledging their provenance? 3. Nate has kept the other moderators fully informed throughout. A more temperate tone would be conducive to a calm resolution of this issue. |

And that my friend shows you are an overgrown brat. And also someone who has limited idea of how strongly Mobilread and its members feel about copyright and protecting authors. If you had actually taken the time, which you apparently haven't by your flippant comment about giving instructions for defeating DRM, that it is forum policy not to provide any help to defeat DRM. the PID hack mentioned bye you is basicly forcing the kindle to show its PID (which is hidden by amazon on purpose) so that a person can PURCHASE a drm protected file from another source. The only major complaint about the list was that the source of the books was not acknowledged. People have worked hard to format those Public domain books for the Kindle and other Ebook readers, and it is only fair that their work be acknowledged. Is it that hard to give credit to someone else, and perhaps a pointer to the site that is actually hosting the content. Or are you afraid that once people are exposed to a more full featured community, they won't come back? Come on! There is more then enough room for everyone. JUst because they come here, doesn't mean that they will not participate in your group. Pulling stupid stunts like this only reflects badly on you, not Nate or Mobilread, and puts you in the company of script kiddies that want to break something, because they can. Do you want to look like them |
