Ok, got it.

Btw, what did you think of Mistborn? After that, I followed the sequence and read Old Man's War, then Spin, and then I went back to finish the rest of Scalzi's trilogy and read Ghost Brigades and The Last Colony. Scalzi's not quite as subtle as Wilson, but his plots are pretty good. Spin is satisfying in a slow and complex way, but the whole adventure feels simplistic compared to Mistborn and the Old Man's War trilogy.

The current eBook that Tor is giving away was previously released by the author and is available for download in LRF, PRC, and IMP right here on MobileRead. Just search for the term starfish and you will find it.

Today's eBook release from Tor is Starfish by Peter Watts. Thanks Tor for an eBook we already got as a free release.

Yeah, nice to have HTML which can be converted to anything else and maybe read directly by future ebook reader.

One of the weekly free books was _The Disunited States of America_. It looks like this is the 4th book of the Crosstime Traffic series. Can this book be read by itself, or will I be lost if I haven't read the first 3 books?

You don't have to have read the any of the previous Crosstime Traffic books to pick understand this one. There are no common characters in any of the books, so far at least. The only thing in common is the concept of traveling to alternate earths. BTW, I read this one over the weekend and I really liked it.

Great thanks. Perhaps I'll give it a try. I am really getting board with Star Dragon... I don't feel so guilty abandoning books I haven't even paid for.

I add my thumbs-up to this one, too. It was fun reading the crosstime versions of colloquialisms we use all the time... some of them made sense, and some were just out there!

Mistborn - fromTor

Hello:

I am just nearing the end of the free Tor ebook 'Mistborn' by 'Brandon Sanderson', and would like to say what a great book it is.
It had raised a couple of questions regarding the author; now I am near the end I went to hunt down the second book in the trilogy to find it is not out yet. So then I went to find 'Elantris' - buit it seems it is not avialable in eBook format...

Can anyone confirm ( I been to the official Branddon Sanderson' website but could not find anything definitive) if 'Elantris' is available in eBook format (legally), and if anyone know if the rest of the mistborn series (when finsihed) will be published in eBook format ( I found the first in the trilogy available at fictionwise - albeit for en extortionate $17 or so)

Mistborn is a great book. So is Well of Ascension, Alcatraz Versus the Librarians, and Elantris. Unfortunately, at this point if you want to read any of them other than Mistborn, you'll have to do the dead-tree versions. I really hope that Tor is planning on having ebooks as a permanent part of their business, but that's still up in the air. On the other hand, if you like Brandon Sanderson you should check out Warbreaker. He's offering it for free on his website, and a lot of people on his forums think it's his best one yet.

At Balticon I asked the Baen guys if they knew what Tor was going to do as far as eBooks go, and they said that they could only give me the stock answer that negotiations are ongoing.

It's not like I don't appreciate the weekly free ebook. Really, I've read an author or two that I wouldn't have even looked at thanks to this little promotional bit. However, I would really like them to get on with whatever it is they're going to do with their new website. If they'll just offer ebooks for sale - through webscription, amazon, or their own site - I'll buy them. Let's just get on with it though.

I hope it's not just at Amazon. That would not be nice for the others here who do not have a Kindle.
