logos, logos everywhere

OK, Sigil, has put its own logo icon on every .txt file on my computer. The app of choice remains WordPad, but the Sigil logo still shows up. Not if .txt is set to NotePad, just if it's WordPad.

It started out setting itself up to be the handler of choice for both .txt and html files, but I stopped that crap immediately.

1. How did they do that with the logo?

I'm assuming they've hidden an icon deep in a WordPad file somewhere.

2. How do I undo it?

This is absolutely and totally unacceptable behavior for any app of any kind. Must be a bunch of kids trying to act like M$.

I suspect you have a Windows problem, rather than a Sigil problem. The associations got set to Sigil and you set it back, but the icon it calls up has not changed. You might try right clicking on the file and select properties to see if you can set the icon back that way. You can also try using default programs in Vista or later.

Nope on who wrote it. It was a PhD graduate student, Valloric, who was good enough to get hired by Google, I think. Now it is John Schember took over from Valloric who apparently has a day job that isn't programming, but he has moved the project forward very well. Not a bunch of kids.

You had the choice when you installed Sigil to make it the default app for epubs. You should have said no if that's not what you wanted. Besides, I think mrmikel is right; you're experiencing a Windows glitch that makes icons randomly change around (even though the correct association is still intact). Happens all the time. Your icon cache is damaged (and it's not caused by Sigil). That could be caused by a virus or just general corruption.

Also, it makes no sense to associate WordPad with epub files... since WordPad can't open a zip file (which is what an epub is).

They've hidden nothing anywhere. It's open-source.

you had a chance at install time to NOT make Sigil the default for those 3 types.
IIRC Uninstalling Sigil will revert Windows to the previous handlers., Then you can re install, removing the ticks for those file types.

As for it being a windows problem, this instance is the first time I have seen anything like this in 10 years running XP Pro, so I don't see how it can be a Windows issue. Properties is the first thing I checked; the icon _changer_ doesn't appear on .txt file properties in XP Pro, and Folder Options shows the regular WordPad icon for .txt files. The Sigil logo appears on the text file icons themselves, not on the Wordpad executable. So it obviously something deeper, as I said. So my original question is valid and unanswered and your defense of Sigil is on a different (sales) subject.

. How did they do it and how do I reverse it?
