How big is the battery?

It's understandable if the battery is more than twice the capacity of regular book readers.

My Sony PRS-T1 seems to last a long time in standby and in use, and that runs Android.

Hi all,

I have been following these JBC threads for a couple of weeks with interest and thought I'd register to offer my experience:

I ordered a JBC at the end of Jan and received it in 10 days (I am from South Africa). I bought it from the UK website since they have the same power supply i.e., 240V. They sent me the device from USA but included a special plug.

Unfortunately I don't have other e-readers to compare it with but can give my personal views:

I have been using the device for reading scientific papers and technical books. For this purpose the device is good. On double columns I can zoom in on a column and the reading is great. I must say I don't have any issues with resolution (as previously discussed in this forum) and really enjoy reading on this device, much better than LCD screen and dare I say paper...

Speed is a slight issue but varies greatly w.r.t. the type of document. Scanned documents can take a while, but vectorized PDF's are bearable. I also have to note that a DJVU book which works on evince in linux is not currently functional (have only tried one djvu file).

The other issue (as also previously mentioned) is the amount of light required. In outside light it is amazing and even during the day it is good. However, at night in my fairly dim house it is bad. I am now replacing some light bulbs with high wattage ones!

W.r.t. the software: Web browser is not present. Small software bugs present. The inability to set a desired zoom is frustrating since sometimes you want just inbetween preset levels and also want finer control when panning. The inability to use the stylus for scribbling was a let down. I really hope & trust these are fixed in the promised updates.

On a positive, the double tap toolbar allows you to change pages even when zoomed in, which was a nice find on this forum

Overall I am happy with the device. It reminds me a bit of the nintendo 3DS which was also released with incomplete software, so I hope Ectaco can also deliver (I also hope they are reading here!) I was opting between the Kindle DX, M92 and I am content with the choice. It comes with a nice cover as well and the ability to add a micro SD card is a big positive over the DX.

Thanks for all the excellent contributions from this forum

I use the device for 1h/day and I recharge it after around 2 weeks.
I read epubs and that is all I do with it. Nothing else. no internet no games ...

Sorry if this question is answered in some other threads, this colour e-ink reader is based on the "glass substrate" as that of black and white readers? Or this is based on the new plastic ones?

As far as I know it's glass. I think only Plastic Logic make plastic ones and they're not available to the general public yet.

This is similar to the K-12 sw they had so it looks as though they developed it themselves, plus as i said with the updates before, when they plan on releasing them we'll surely know where the download link is coming from.
Hanvon uses windows ce at the core to run the device. I doubt Ectaco dumped the core OS to develop from. Besides it shoudl say something about the OS in the "about" screen. anyone checked?

Plastic Logic - Putin's Solyndra? Or a real tech boost for the Russians?

As far as I know the Russian eTextbook competitive contracts are still underway and
no particular "winner" has been announced. In the end you could have both Ectaco
and Liquid Plastic readers being supplied to Russian schools. Ectaco is already supplying
their jetBook K-12 devices to a number of school systems in Russia, and elsewhere.

Luck;
Ken

Not a sure sign that they ever will be. Bought up by Rosnano (Russian company - not sure if i spelled it correctly). Plus looks like they're only doing b/w, no color
