I am finishing David Dickinson's Goodnight, Sweet Prince. This is the first in his Lord Francis Powerscourt Mystery Series. The series is set in 1892 in Victorian England. I liked it and am going to follow up with the second book Death and The Jubilee.

"Up Country" by Nelson DeMille. Very accurate descriptions of Vietnam, both during the war years and modern times, and a serious theme done with a humorous view. Well worth reading, especially if you were there in the late 60's-early 70's, but a good thriller even if you weren't!

Just Finished:

- The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien [third time]

This is one of my favorite books ever. In fact, I'd probably put it in my top five favorite novels of all time. I re-read it for the first time in a decade in order to get ready for the movie later this year, and it was just as good as I remember it.

- The House of Silk: The New Sherlock Holmes Novel by Anthony Horowitz (57%)

- A Study in Sherlock by Laurie R. King, et al (16%)

- A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin (31%) [on hold]

- A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin (20%) [on hold]

I'm mostly proofreading some blogs. Not really sure why but apparently my ceasing writing them upset all 2 of my friends who bothered reading.

Just finished "Last Bus to Woodstock", by Colin Dexter; the first of the "Morse" books. It's many years since I read this series, and I'd forgotten just how very good it is. The first few books were written before Morse was televised, and the literary Morse is somewhat different to the TV depiction. Morse is described as a "lightly-built, dark-haired man" and is several years younger than Sergeant Lewis. He drives a Lancia - this transformed into the familiar Mk 2 Jaguar in the books written after the TV series became popular!

The actual story is excellent, concerning the murder of a girl found dead in a pub carpark. The story is well-told; the resolution has a "sting in the tail" which took me by surprise.

I can't recommend this highly enough. It's a truly excellent book. It's a pity that Colin Dexter wrote so few books compared to many of his fellow crime-writers; there are 13 Morse novels, plus a collection of short stories. All very well worth reading.

And now I see I'm #1 on the waiting list at my library for A Dance with Dragons again, so I'd better hurry up and finish those Sherlock books!!!

Let me add to the recommendation. I haven't read them in years, but enjoyed them very much when I read them the first time. And the TV series didn't change my enjoyment of the books. It's a shame there aren't more.

On another note -- try the Frost books by R. D. Wingfield. Unfortunately, they aren't available in Kindle in the US. But well worth a read.
