Ok lets start listing our normal running apps in background to find the common thread:

Mine are:
bad a.s.s. battery monitor
Avast mobile security
Screen dim
volume control
Startup cleaner
Watchdog lite
ES security manager

That's it other than the normal Kindle fire apps that must be running all the time.

I'm suspecting, however, it's running other apps that leads to the occasional problem. I've seen this sort of problem on other Android devices; a particular combination of apps (very difficult to pin down) confuses memory management.

This, of course, is the downside of Android's comprehensive multitasking where almost any combination of apps can be running simultaneously. Apple avoids this problem in their iOS devices by severely limiting the apps that can multitask. Pay your money and take your choice.
