Accessing Calibre

Very new to calibre and will need a little help and pointing in the right direction.

adding books and editing metadate couldn't be easier, I notice that calibre has a server. I have read several articles on it. I have set it up but for the life of me I cannot understand it all.

I have a little knowledge of html etc. but how do I access my calibre library from somewhere else other than my home network when I appear to be using a url for localhost ?

Also when converting to different formats, can I change the folder where this is output too, (appdata/local/temp etc)

appreciate help or pointing

You'll need to access the calibre server via your external IP address (Google: what is my ip).

Are you behind a router? In that case, you're also going to need to learn how to set port forwarding for your router.

Since home internet connections tend to have dynamic/changing IP addresses, you might want to sign up for an account from one of the dynamic DNS services (e.g. http://www.no-ip.com/). That way, instead of using something like http://74.125.224.72/ you can use http://myname.no-ip.com/.

to access outside your local network (LAN), a few things need to be done (with the knowledge that any outside access to you LAN has additional risks).
1) If you use DHCP (most do) and want to continue because the PC changes networks from time to time, then yo need to 'reserve a specific address for your Calibre machine (See you Router's help for this). If you can live with a Static IP, assign one outside the DHCP range (limits controlled by your Router-DHCP server).

2)Set up Port forwarding on your router. Yo will need to know a) the port number assigned from the Calibre Sever (sharing) configuration preference. b) The static or reserved IP of that machine.

3) you will need to know TODAYS (it changes unless you buy a Static one) public IP (WAN side) of your router or use a service like DynDNS.ORG to handle the changing assignment.
This is what you enter when off-LAN

DynDNS.org no longer offers free accounts. I think you might still be able to get one but it involves jumping through some hoops (first need to sign up for a free trial to a Pro account and then just let the trial period expire).

Yep, I know. That is why i describe it as: like. $20 a year for the PAID non-business account is tame. My ISP want $10 a month for a static IP.
