Can you tell me.........

Hi there, newbie Kindle owner here, and loving it! Especially since I've managed to stumble blindly on links to download feedbooks and manybooks directly to my Kindle. Is there such an animal for this site? If I've reached the wrong forum, maybe you could point the way? Thanks in advance for any help......Donna

From what I've read, you can download from here to your computer and then go from your computer to your Kindle here, but no direct downloads from here. Someone please correct me (or slap me silly) if I'm wrong.

Well, my Kindle hasn't even arrived yet, but what I've done is create a separate directory for my ebooks, and then just click on the download links and "save" .... I don't try to open them because I don't have the software on my PC to read them.

Anyway, once my Kindle arrives (Monday ... lovely Monday), I will connect it to my PC using the USB cable that comes with it (or one of the ones I have hanging around the house). The PC should recognize the Kindle as a new drive under "My Computer". Then, all I should theoretically have to do is select those books that I want to put on my Kindle, and then copy (control + C) and paste (control +V) into the Kindle drive ... either in the main memory or onto the SD card (if you have one of those). Drag and drop also works dandy.

What you are probably doing is trying to open or run the file on your computer, and you can't do that ...

A guy named Woody in the kindlekorner group at Yahoo has created a download guide. Here's a clip from his post: "The download guide is a kindle book. Think of it as a catalog. . . . . . Using the Kindle web browser, enter this URL:
LINK DELETED That will download the guide to your Kindle." (That redirects to LINK DELETED. )

I downloaded it, transferred it to my PC, renamed it from .azw to .prc and opened it with MobiPocket Reader. It appears to me that all the books in his download guide are from MobileRead -- but I have not explored the document thoroughly to determine whether he provides links to other sites or not.

Attached to this message are two screen shots: The beginning of the "newest books" from the download guide and the eBooks upload area of MobileRead for a couple of days before the 1 June 2008 date in the most recent download guide.

I think this guy has done a good thing by putting together a MobiPocket file that can be used by Kindle users to directly download books. BUT ... he never acknowledges the source of the books. I would guess that very few (if any) of the members of the kindlekorner group know about MobileRead and are totally unaware where the books come from.

As long as it's a prc without DRM (like the books here) there should be no need to change the extension. The Kindle supports non-DRM Mobi files.

All you have to do is move them to your Kindle. You don't have to change the suffix.

He also didn't ask us. Elsi, I edited your post above and removed the links.

Alexander had considered a download guide like the one you linked to and decided not to have one. A mass download guide is an invitation to hoarders to download every ebook here.

You will not be able to read, on your PC, Kindle books that you download.

But, non-secure mobi books that you download you can read on your PC if you want with the Mobireader software. You can get that software from http://www.mobipocket.com/en/Downloa...ailsReader.asp .

If you bought Kindle books on Amazon... all you have to do is turn on your Kindle and make sure the wireless is on and they will download right to your Kindle automatically.

I have firefox configured to always prompt me to ask "Open" or "Save". So, when I choose a book from the upload thread, I get a pop-up, select "Save", and specify the directory on my computer where I want it to go.

If you can't get your Firefox configured to prompt you for saving the files, try using your right mouse button -- right click & then select "Save Link As". That will allow you to download the file to your hard drive.

On my laptop, I have a folder named eBooks. Under that folder, I have folders for every location from which I download books. The attached screen shot shows some of my folder structure. I'm quite adamant to maintain a directory structure that will let me know where every file came from -- particularly since there's no way to keep them organized on the Kindle.

I back my files up to a USB hard drive as well, using the exact same directory structure.

I had started writing a challenging note & then decided that it wasn't my place to do so, though it bugs me no end that he hadn't been up front about where these lovely books are coming from. I've been tempted many times to say something on the kindlekorner list to let people know where Woody's list came from, but just didn't know how to do it.

While I enjoy using the download guide from Feedbooks from time to time -- more because it contains the "lists" in an easy to find/use format -- I'm not a heavy user of the Whispernet facility on the Kindle. It's easy enough to download to my PC and then transfer to the Kindle. It amazes me that some Kindle users seem to find it such a challenge.

Nah, I knew that. Although I didn't realize that the Mobi reader software was for free and an easy download. I will pick that up. Thanks bunches.

I just knew that, until my Kindle shows up, I won't be reading the bulk of my downloads and any of my Kindle content specifically for the Kindle. (Really, I just can't wait .... and then I'm going to start making covers ... I've got what I hope is a great idea for covers ...)
