A backlist series (Bio of a Space Tyrant) of an author I liked (Piers Anthony) has appeared very cheaply in the Kindle store, with the first one free. I couldn't resist.
Alas, my read:bought ratio is now under 2 again! |

Yeah, I went for that same bargain. "Bought" the first, and the second in the series. Was going to buy them all, then noticed that they're available as Amazon Prime books, so I'm going to risk it that they stay in Prime and I can borrow them one a month. Not helping the TBR, I'm afraid. But is helping on my keeping the buying costs down.

I have a tendency to grab anything that I think I may read at some point. Plus grab anything my granddaughter might like. I just put them in my archives until they are needed. Can't hurt to hold onto them. That way, depending on my mood, they are there when I want them.

I quite like mystery/crime stories, so I've been sorely tempted by the (now over 20) books for $0.99 each. But since I've just spent on some SF back catalogue titles, I shall continue to resist.

(ETA: Apparently the poster whose question regarding how many books we all had was banninated for spam or whatever. So, that's the context for this particular reply which otherwise looks really random without it.)
I think I've personally got fewer than 400 I've actually paid for. Some of them are magazines and anthologies/collections which I don't count because I skip reading individual stories so I never really "finish" them. Some of them are bundles in which I essentially paid for a bunch of books in order to get a deal on the 1-2 I really wanted and the other few I was willing to try out. And some of them are cheap-on-sale re-buys of books I've already read and enjoyed and was willing to toss a little extra money at the author/publisher for when it was discounted. So I'd say roughly ~300 novel-type things I purchased with the intent to read/keep, of which I've read new approximately 100 < 150 and had ~50 pre-read when I bought them. That of course refers to e-books alone, because I have many more paper books in my library. Last edited by ATDrake; 02-09-2012 at 10:09 PM. Reason: Context is for the weak. Since this is an "addicts support" thread, added for the weak-willed when it comes to e-book-buying. |

Arggh. I was doing pretty well, but I got tempted by Bruno, Chief of Police after reading about it on Dana Stabenow's site. And even though it was $12.99, above my limit, and an author I hadn't read, and not on sale and all that, I went ahead and bought it. Sigh.
The good news is, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. But now I must climb back up on the wagon! |

Yes, very bad. It was a moment of weakness, and I wasn't anywhere near my computer to get help. Amazon and Kindle 3g are an evil combination in some ways.
In my defense, however, it probably had a lot to do with the book I was then reading, a very so-so book about the Millenium trilogy. Made me want something better. But I _did_ have rather more than one or two alternatives on my Kindle already, so ultimately no excuse. |

I weakened and bought another of the Poisoned Pen books. $0.99 is nothing really, a mere pittance. It was my reward for only buying 4 of the Audible $4.95 sale audiobooks (out of 19 I originally put on my wishlist). Plus it was to support a Canadian author *waves flag*.

Maybe you made a pricey impulse buy, but on the other hand you started reading immediately, and have apparently been enjoying a big chunk of what you've read thus far. It seems like you're generally satisfied with the quality and entertainment value of your purchase, even if not the particular circumstances under which was acquired. And perhaps it may lead to your wishlisting a new favourite author to wait for the discount sales upon now that you know they're worth getting. I'd consider this a break-even fall-and-rebound situation. You are after all getting your money's worth from a book you are not putting off reading into an indefinite later in the ever-growing TBR pile like a lot of the rest of us are. |

@ATDrake: I suppose that's true. But, OTOH, I had _several_ other books bought recently (favourite author, long standing series, or big sale) that were on my TBR that just got pushed down. And that doesn't even cover the library books that are going to expire.

The Fictionwise 60% off has got me again. But it was for books that were on my fictionwise wishlist, and I'm three quarters of the way through the first in the series (which was a freebie) and enjoying it, so in this case I think it's a justified purchase, We probably won't see 60% off again for a few months (last time was October 2011).
But my read:bought ratio is 1.21:1 now, and not over 2 like it should be if I'm going to meet my goal for 2012. |

Fictionwise... That name sounds familiar... Don't think I've been there in over a year... They let me down so hard, it still hurts...

I managed to resist the Fictionwise coupon, but then Samhain had a 30% coupon, and La Desperada was discounted to 0.99 , and What Ho, Automaton! by Chris Dolley sounded fascinating. And then Booksonboard had a discount code for Carina Press books, and... Yeah. I have been bad. But most of the titles were on my wishlist, and no more than 2.99. Urm.... Except for Shaded Vision. But I did use a Kobo coupon for that one ( the upside to living outside the US). In total I have spent.. way too much.
