I love my Vox also, got it for my birthday in Nov. and the only problem I have so far is trying to install stuff from the Android market. I saw a post about rooting it like kcarscadden mentioned. maybe that is the way to go. I use it mainly for reading but do some browsing and gmail. Angry birds is fun to play on it

Rather than repeat stuff that has already been said in this forum dozens of times, why not just do a search? I see at least 30 posts mentioning it. It seems to affect a small proportion of Vox's and they're still working on a solution. Since you're asking, you probably haven't experienced it.

You say a small proportion, I say a majority. We will never know.

[edit]: And to be more helpful to the OP, look at the stickied "bug catalogue" thread.

SOD affects other Android tablets as well so not just a Kobo Vox issue either.

Okay, it seems like a considerable proportion of people on this forum have experienced SOD, but that does not mean that's a representative sample of all the Vox's sold. People come here when they have a problem. I'm guessing there are thousands out there who haven't seen that problem, so never searched for an answer.

"We'll never know" is a safe bet. Personally, I'm not sure if I've seen it or not because when I first had the Vox I didn't really know what I was doing and probably rebooted the device when it may not have woke up as it was supposed to because I thought I had turned it off. The timing for pushing the power button has also been changed through updates. My daughter got a Vox for Christmas and when I asked her if she had seen this, she said it's occasionally been unresponsive and slow to load (seemed to freeze), but she thought it was because of the thousand books she had loaded. However, this wasn't serious enough for her to ask me about it, or go searching on-line. But if, in fact, the majority of all Vox's sold suffer from SOD, Kobo would be all over the news and possibly out of business by now.

I agree that knowing how many people have these problems we will never know, could be just a few or could be many

checking on a forum is not a very accurate way to check this, I read many forums everyday and if you go by the number of people with issues on things, you would never buy any products

as above, SOD affects other Android tablets, If it's an Android issue, is it something Kobo can fix? , and curious why some aren't affected

When I first go my Vox I noticed sluggishness at times, but since I started powering off over night I haven't seen this, just wondering if this is when lots of apps are open and the OS is trying to close things down to clear out the RAM (get this same issue with iOS 5 if I don't force close apps every so often)

Not sure if this has been brought up before, but what if it was a hardware issue? Components come from many sources, especially after production is ramped up to satisfy demand.

interesting thought, any idea if all Vox's are made at the same place, mine is made in China, are any made in Canada? or other countries

just checked the big thread about bugs, for SOD

There are currently [7] Root units and [4] Regular units in this thread experiencing this problem.

Is it really as much of an issue now, might have missed threads on it (or people given up talking about it), but doesn't seem to get mentioned that much now

All Vox and most modern high tech electronics are made in southest Asia, China for Vox, Taiwan for PlayBook, Korea for Samsung. With modern System On a Chip there are very few components not made together, really just the battery, speakers, screen and case. The 'chip' includes processor, controllers, memory, devices, almost everything manufactured at once.

Almost all Android uses the same inner ARM core. Software addons and customization are the main differentiating factors.

Search for "Android sleep of death" and you'll find millions of hits. Gingerbread stands out but Honeycomb is also buggy. ICS is based on both...

Why do some crash but not all? Different apps, configuration, usage patterns.

Just Googled.

android sleep of death - About 3,220,000 results

kobo vox sleep of death - About 4,070 results

Yeah, it's certainly not something exclusive to the Vox, which makes me doubt the Kobo boffins will discover a cure-all.

I took your search and appended the word "fix". There seem to be a couple of common themes: one is that the system is awaken from sleep every few minutes. Maybe that explains why some of our Voxes are flashing on while in sleep mode. The other common fix appears to be at the kernel level, which implies a driver or hardware issue.

Anyhow, only time will tell on the fix.
