I'm facing a similar problem myself, as to whether or not it is worth it to roll back to an earlier firmware.
Now the question is, from what I've been able to follow on the different threads, is that each of the firmware revisions managed to fix something while breaking something else. Is it possible for someone to create a matrix of the different firmwares (538, the one that is currently shipping on the Gen3 (think is 641) and 685) with a list of what is fixed and what is broken. Would probably make it easier for everyone to have a handy reference guide, and make the best decision for their particular usage, as while some people are just using Mobipocket books, while others need some basic PDF support, while battery life may be key for others. As I haven't had the Gen3 For long, I obviously can't do this, but am more then willing to chime in to help. |

674 is what the current Gen3 ships with. At least mine did. I've noticed no difference whatsoever between 674 and 685 (other than the fact that the version number's changed from "1.0" to "1.1") but there again, I don't use PDF, and that's where the issue appears to lie.

Very well, making a strightforward reading of the poll results, here's a few conclusions (taken from a sample of 36 users):
- Almost half (~47%) the users had some kind of problem with the Cybook, some (~14%)even had to return it! - With more or less effort, one third (~33%) of the users managed to solve their problems on their own. - The other half of the users have nothing to complain about (or if they are, it's something considered minor rnough to not be a problem). Also, some of that half don't use all the features, so they are less likely to encounter problems. Conclusion: there's almost a 50/50 chance that the Cybook you will order will have some kind of problem. One in 7 people might even have to return the Cybook. Of course, this is a very limited sample to take any serious conclusions. Last edited by Over; 06-07-2008 at 05:56 AM. |

Please bear in mind that most of the problems that "early adopters" had have been fixed by subsequent firmware updates. Eg, the original firmware would crash on lookup of certain words in certain dictionaries (or simply not find them, even though they were present). That bug hit a LOT of people, but was fixed in firmware v538.
To say, therefore, that "there's almost a 50/50 chance that the Cybook you will order will have some kind of problem" is erroneous, because the current models do not have these bugs. One might also ask "what is a problem"? Is the fact that the occasional button press is missed and you have to press the button again to get it to register a "problem"? All CyBooks do this, and yet the votes in this poll clearly demonstrate that for some people this is a problem and for others, it's not. I'd take the results of this poll with a very large pinch of salt ![]() |

The only thing seems to be that navigation looking up words is a bit faster but the price seems to be half the battery time. |

Sure, apart from major and minor problems, there's no discrimination of problems. Some people view your given example of problem as a minor problem, other don't see it as a problem and voted "no". So it could be more than half the people with problems, or the opposite.
But this is a very simple and generalistic poll, it should be taken as just that. ![]() |

I thought that it fixed the problem you were having of certain words in your dictionary not being found, didn't it? Or was that bug fixed in 538? I forget!

Ah, I forgot about that. Yes it did. So I can choose between working dictionary and very bad batteri time and non-working dictionary and reasonable battery time.

I apparently broke the screen on mine too, but I did NOT put a hand on the screen, or set something on it, or drop it, or any other action that I can remember that might have caused the problem - just stopped working when I tried to use it in the morning. I finally got it back in the mail to go to Bookeen today.
Note to US shippers: USPS apparently has a standard of not shipping ANY charged lithium batteries on ANY international shipment. UPS (and probably Fedex and other carriers) don't appear to make this limitation. I *could* (I think) have shipped the thing with a *discharged* battery, but since the screen was broken, I couldn't tell whether it was discharged, now could I? You might get away with it from an easygoing clerk at the post office, but I didn't. Eventually, I took the battery out, and shipped it back with no battery included. We'll see what problems that brings. I'd like to emphasize that I *DON'T KNOW* what I might have done to cause the damage. Without that knowledge, I can only suggest two things: 1. buy an accidental damage plan (and unfortunately, NAEB doesn't offer one), and 2. Take additional care with a replacement case that has stronger protection across the screen - the included leather case apparently flexes too much to be a good protection. I think it needs a stronger shield across the front piece. |

Yes the hanging and Crashing is only for PDF files, the Mobi format works fine. I got the Cybook to read Technical documents and it doesn't seem to good at that. I have decided to sell the Cybook https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24813 and try an Iliad https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24802 I really don't think the Cybook should be advertised as supporting PDF files, if it was a UK company I would try to get my money back under the Sales Of Goods Act as it is sold in a state not fit for purpose, but as it is a French company I think It will be too difficult. We are promised improvements in PDF support in the next firmware release, so it may, perhaps, be worthwhile looking again at the Gen3 when that arrives. |

The problem is that they managed to break what little support they had, when trying to fix some of their other problems. ![]() They really need to work on beta testing their firmware updates. |

Totally agree!
As a Mobi bookreader, the Gen3 is great. For PDFs, it's awful. |
