I managed to develop an allergy to prawns a couple of years ago, after eating them all my life.
I had some king prawns and went into mild anaphylaxis. So I gave them up. Then, twice, prawns of normal size brought me out in red lumps, swelling and difficulty breathing. Most of the time they weren't a problem. The doctor surmises that I'm either allergic to the preservatives, or to some sort of plankton that the prawns eat. So no more prawns at all any more... |

yes, i was astounded to learn that you can develop an allergy at any time in your life. i wasn't allergic to anything (except bees, maybe) when i was a child. it only really started around 15 years ago i think (can't be sure, since for a long time i misidentified the symptoms, since it never occurred to me i might have developped an allergy).
actually patricia, you should consider yourself lucky ; if you *must* develop an allergy, at least you had the good sense to choose something as creepy and revolting as shrimp, and also easily avoided. (i'm allergic to prawns and shrimp as well. it's psycho-somatic) Last edited by zelda_pinwheel; 06-05-2008 at 07:01 PM. |

No, no, no, ZP -- shrimp are really yummy!! I ache for/with Ms Patricia. (I too have the dust mite allergies, and went through years of shots. Since insurance doesn't pay for a MAID SERVICE, I fear there is still a lot of dust and etc at my house.)

I'm convinced that the real issue is stress, actually, and the allergies are just one of many clever ways my body has of trying to tell me to STOP THAT.
Unfortunately, the main sources of stress in my life are (in no particular order) my job and my kids, and I can't get rid of either at this point. So allergy shots it is.... |

Sell them on the human organ blackmarket for enough money to retire on....no, no, no, we've been there haven't we? Besides, the party menu is done and fully supplied.
Hey, just noting in this Vent and Rant thread that the other large bookseller in Australia, Angus & Robertson, has just bought Borders Australasia. Here's to future years of them grinding their success like a broken bottle in the face of Dymocks and that scumbag, Don Grover, plus his Hoard of Directors. Cheers, Marc (I'm not bitter, honest) |

[QUOTE=Justy;194362]... now how am I suppose to avoid ice cream?!?!
Make ice-cream using soy milk. I do, and it is verrrryyyyy yummy... I used to be extremely allergic to cats - now I live with 6 of them....the allergy just 'went'. I am now very allergic to the general topical medicines for ear infections, leaving me with just a single (so far) concoction that will provide any cure. But even worse is I am now allergic to some of the everyday additions to common products that are used for preservative etc...makes life very interesting, especially when hithertoo products suddenly get a change of mixture that brings in one of my no-no list... ![]() |

We found out my wife had a severe allergy. We knew about the pollen, nuts and the cats, but what we didn't know was that she could not eat wheat, rhye and a bunch of other cereals, and she was allergic to milk protein.
So she could not eat bread, no milk, no milk products and no eggs as well as no nuts, cats and flowers ![]() So she started with "food abstention". Since I'm the chef around the house, we eliminated all those things that she could not eat, and for about a year, everythign was great. The only troubles she had was when she was forced to eat out. Try to find a restaurant that uses spelt-flour, or has rice-noodles. Even a lot of asian restaurants use regular noodles, and have wheat-flour in their spring rolls. Anyhow, everything was converted to spelt (which she could eat, thank god), no eggs, lots of soy products etc. And the test after a year of doing this showed that she completely lost her allergy against these. She'll never get rid of the wheat-allergy, unfortunately, because it was one of the first and it was already "detectable" in her blood. But she's back to eating eggs and milk and CHEESE (one of the hardest to substitute, because there is no substitute). So, I suggest if you think you might react to something, get a proper allergy test done, also for foods, and then force yourself to stay away from those foods. Chances are good you'll get rid of that allergy! |

Note for those with an allergy/intolerance to milk - the many names it can be called and the equally peculiar products it can be a constituent of - i.e. washing up liquid!!! |

Yes, and lactic acid is used in quite a few skin creams. So is salicylic acid, which is not good for those with asprin intolerance.

My wife is allergic to pollen of every form and eats Sufafed like Dr. House eats Vicodin. (Lucky she has low blood pressure.) Me? I like the windows open at night even in the winter. Did I mention she also dislikes cold?
