Passing your property down to your children has been found throughout history, I have no problem with copyrights that function the same way.

I certainly hope that was an attempt at humor of some kind.

Uh...everyone already knows where the worst reprisals are coming from, the government. Look, I grew up in the 80s, so I'm receptive to a "knowlege is power"/"knowing is half the battle" line of reasoning, but I'm going to maybe suggest that there's just the teensiest possibility that this isn't the best thought out plan in the world.

@Giggleton
You may think all information should be free. And I am sure you are willing to share all of your personal information in exchange as this would be kind of a fair return. Me I have things to hide. The least I can think of at the moment is being too sick to do laundry in the laundry downstairs or scrub it in the sink, so I put it in the dishwasher. Imagine if this was widely known by my neighbours. They would ostracize me or alternatively come to the door with a load of laundry and ask to use my dishwasher. Anonymity is good. Non-anonymity bad. I suppose we can ask ourselves why our neighbors would like to know the intricacies of our laundering systems? Perhaps the dishwasher is a more efficient method for laundering clothes? Should this knowledge be kept secret?
To attribute or not attribute, that is the question. Should every bit of text have inherent the possibility to be traced back to its creator, or should we allow for those who had no meaningful hand in the texts creation to take ownership of texts and distribute them as they see fit? Copyright has extended itself into the biological realm, should we allow it to extend further? "You and I" are for these intents and purposes pieces of text, strings of information which when read express who we are. Should another text have the option to copy and paste a piece of me into their own book? Or should we instead copyright ourselves? Locking ourselves into a static text? Forcing stability? Stability is an illusion. Forcing it's appearance only increases the magnitude of destruction when the structure eventually crashes. Common Sense?? ![]() ![]() |

Well Dishwashing is not overall IMO a more efficient method of washing clothes, but it is actually in some ways more effective. Strange though it may seem the clothes in question appeared cleaner, colors brighter.
And my neighbours would not ordinarily think about my laundry. But people being people, if it was brought to their attention, they might find themselves ranging up and taking sides. Is this sanitary, they may ask. Will my enjoyment of living here be seriously undermined if I am in a building where people wash clothes in a dishwasher? How come she has a dishwasher and I don't? Mildly surprised by your reply however, as I thought you were totally opposed to the idea of common sense ![]() Helen |

I support copyrights for limited periods of time, but if I had to choose between no copyright and eternal copyright, I would choose no copyright, and do so with no regrets. Copyright isn't a natural right. It is a government granted exclusive right to copy for a limited period of time. It is a deal: in exchange for these works eventually entering the public domain, the author gets exclusive rights to the work. It's the same thing with patents. It patents were eternal, advancement would come to a stop. People don't have to patent their inventions, they can protect them themselves by treating them as trade secrets. The risk is that they won't remain secret.
Our culture is based on the public domain. As it is, nothing will enter the public domain until 2019, and that is assuming copyright isn't extended even further. Copyright does seem to get extended to please Disney, but the irony is that many of the Disney movies were based on public domain works. Eternal copyright would be as stagnating as eternal patent would. |

I voted to do away with it because there are too many works that have remained locked away for far too long.
Realistically, for personal copyrights, I would support a copyright for the life of the creator plus the life of a surviving spouse (with reasonable limitations on the latter). For corporate copyrights, 26 years renewable once. |

I'm not sure where the common sense idea came from, it seems that most people think their senses are sound enough to be called common, I certainly do. Unfettered access to all knowledge by everyone? It just makes sense. |
