Hah, the Three Musketeers sadly can't count for this, considering I've read it so many times I've memorized it. XD I started on that one when I was 12 actually.....

The Sharing Knife series by Lois McMaster Bujold. An even mixture of romance and fantasy. Four books.

The Vorkosigan series, also by Lois McMaster Bujold. SF this time, not fantasy, and a longer, on-going series. If you want to jump in with the romance rather than the more mil-sf aspect of this series, start with the omnibus edition of the first two books, Cordelia's Honor

Not so much on the romance side, but I think you'd enjoy the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane

The Sharing Knife series is excellent, and is also available as a very well read set of audio books from Audible (narrator is Bernadette Dunne). The first one is here. I "read" these books as audio books, and am getting ready to go back and re-read them as eBooks.

I love Jacqueline Carey's books - great world and good romance but well done and not at all cheap -- the story and the magic really take center stage. Her Naamah books and also the Kushiel series. I also like Carol Berg a lot.

Love the Kushiel books! I was going to recommend those, but you beat me to it. +1

Have you read the first Dune book? There's a pretty good romantic subplot going on there with a heavy SF backdrop.

My other idea is Sanderson. His books almost always have a romantic subplot but are all epic fantasy. I'm particularly fond of Warbreaker.

Recent novels that I enjoyed were Queen of Kings by Maria Dahvana Headley and Mechanique by Genevieve Valentine. Both have romantic sub-plots (well, main plot in the case of the former).

Yay! Another fan! As long as we're sort of on the subject ... would you know of any Kushiel/Naamah- like books out there to recommend? I'm so sad I read them all - I even went back and read them again, which is really rare for me.

I quite prefer the follow-up "Palladin of Souls" but yes.
Lois McMaster Bujold is definitely a must read !
