Most doc's that we talked with seem to agree that is the best range for the cut off between when breast milk is superior for the child and when food becomes better. I know there are cultures that go much further, but medically at least my understanding is 6m-12ms is the crossing point for effectiveness.

Glad that you have power back T. It sucks been without it.

Since I am planning on going back to work, I have a feeling that as soon as the baby can eat solid food and that is the majority of his/her diet I will stop breast feeding. I might still pump so that the baby has my milk during that transition phase but use a bottle only.

That makes sense. Food is scarce and breast feeding decreases the number of mouths that you have to feed. The Mother needs extra calories but not as many as the child would on its own. Toss in the difficulty of prepping food that an infant or toddler can eat and you have an excellent case for breast feeding until the child can handle eating the food that everyone else eats.

Most people living in more developed countries have access to foods that can be used to feed children without breast feeding so we don't see it as normal to breast feed until the child is four.

I woman needs 800 more calories a day to nurse. I would imagine that a three year old child needs more then that.

You are ignoring basic energy considerations.

The only way for a breast-feeding mother to give a baby/child more calories in breast milk than she herself additionally consumes is by using up her own fat reserves. This is what usually happens for the first six to twelve months, but can't be continued indefinitely.

Good morning, all! A bright beautiful morning but they promise snow this afternoon... Gotta hurry up with breakfast and get in a quick ride before the roads get slick! Big mug of unbranded Keemun tea tea along side a bowl of rice, crab (it's the season!) and tsukemono, and I'm outta here!



There was a woman in my son's mother's group who was still breast feeding her four year old... The kid would be off playing with her friends, feel hungry, run back and pull up Mommy's shirt for a quick feed... I thought that was a bit long to be breast feeding but she believed that the children should naturally wean themselves.

We Americans really can be so remarkably prudish, especially when compared with the rest of the world. I still remember the "Jane Russell" bra advertisements where she would model the bras... worn OVER her sweater. It's a sad commentary on a culture when the first husband and wife couple to be seen sharing the same bed on American TV had to be Fred and Wilma Flintstone! Here in Japan, elementary school kids all share the same locker rooms for swimming. There is no giggling or embarrassment when you grow up with nudity.

and it is an excellent nutritional source for people who are limited by resources and/or poverty

which is why it is such an excellent weight reduction plan post-pregnancy. I left the hospital wearing my pre-pregnancy jeans!
