That would also explain why people that own a Fire and a different Kindle use it primarily to read. The books you already have, you can now read for free on your Fire.

And if it is true that Amazon loses money on selling those Fire, than everybody that does not like Amazon should buy a Fire just out of spite.

For e-book novel reading, e-ink is the only way.

When it comes to novels formatted as e-books, e-ink seems the most comfortable way for me to read them.

Met with editors the other day after one of them had received a KF as a present. To my shock and outrage, I found I rather liked it. After friends had revived me with smelling salts and a few slaps of a coarse-grained leather glove, I was able to focus on the screen and thought the resolution fairly decent. Slicker and less homely than my Kindle 3 (though I'd still rather read on that), and perhaps better for everyday eyestrain than the first iPad, which is the only one I've tried.

Choosing to watch movies would depend on how bad the KF is likely to stutter on streamed video. If it doesn't do the job exceptionally well, then that could be part of the reason for the low multimedia numbers.

Anyway, I'd best lie down and fan myself now to avoid passing on the vapors to my bitter half.

That sounds a little racist. I know two guys at my work. The one is on his Droid phone all night long, including reading books on it. The other uses an iPod touch to read books on it all night long.

When I am on the computer I can read for hours on my LCD screen - but that is for MR. Not sure what would happen if I would want to read a novel. Probably go move it over to my Odyssey, only because I can carry it around the house and lay down in bed, lay on the couch, sit in the recliner ...

Heck if i have a looong meeting on the toilet, I take my reader with me.

Thank you for that appetizing image of the uses to which you put your reader. I feel it fair to mention, however, that if you plan on reselling the Odyssey at some point, these public confessions could put a crimp on buyers' nostrils.

I'm curious, though -- what do you mean by racist? Do you mean CCR's dismissal of LCD screens for reading sounds intolerant and therefore prejudiced?

I don't plan on selling my Odyssey. It will break or die before I get rid of it. And come one, don't tell me you never been in a house that has reading material in the bathroom. The paper versions are more prone to soak up bad smells than the digital one, imho.

Yes. He seams to make the assumption that because he doesn't like LCD for reading, that everybody must think so too. Otherwise he would not be name-calling those that actually read on a reading device. It says Kindle on it, Kindle means reading. I sometimes get asked "Oh is this a Kindle?" "No, it is just like a Kindle, only its made from a different company". Now Kindle Fire can not only read, could also be useful for graphic novels, magazines, news.

It seems to me you are going to extraordinary lengths to pick holes in this.
Playing music wasn't listed, for example, so that would be 'Other'.
It seems pretty obvious that by 'Use apps', they mean use apps that they have downloaded to the device, rather than those which were built in.

Yeah,

I basically use it for reading. It is lighter than my iPad.

For streaming or browsing the web, even emails, I still prefer my iPad. And for long reading sessions, my Kindle 3G keyboard.

I use the Fire to play Angry Birds or read with Mantano. During the holidays it made a great music player.

The Fire is not the worst to read on. I don't where one gets that. Purchase an app call Screen Dimm for night reading and it's perfect!

I have my Fire tweaked not rooted but I use Go! Launcher to give me an Android looking screen instead of the default bookcase interface. I can switch back and forth from one launcher to other though. I use another app called Rotating Wallpaper to get rid of Amazon's and use my own.
With a few tweaks it's a great tablet by default it's a great multimedia device.

No, YOUR taste is wrong!

For better or worse, most ereading is happening on LCD devices, a trend that will only grow with tablets proliferating. The aesthetics of the two displays are very much a matter of personal taste. For many people, backlights are a large part of the appeal of ereading vs. paper. It was the first thing I heard from both my mom and my sister when they started ereading on phones: oh, I can read in bed without a light.

I wouldn't mind having an eink device around as a backup, but that's what it would be--my reader of last resort.

Before I got my Fire I used my phone too. going from 3.2" screen to a 7" took some getting use to.
