I still don't get the point of Mirasol screens. As far as I can tell, it's just an old-fashioned (grayish-green) LCD screen that does color (badly - everything looks washed out) with bad viewing angles.

At least the Kyobo was that way. The one in the Forbes article does look better - assuming it's not using faked images, of course.

Well, there seems to be conflicts. Look at this quote from Forbes:
"Since the Hanvon C18 utilizes mirasol, it promises the same kinds of benefits the technology does, namely bright colors even in the sun, weeks-long battery life and a refresh rate fast enough to support video." (my bold)

Says "bright" colors, "sunlight" reading, and "video." Kind of like a LCD (AMOLED) tablet plus e-Ink sunlight readability with very long battery life. If true, that is fantastic!

It is nice to see a continued development of 5"-6" eReaders.

the technology is complete different.

an old fashioned non back lit lcd display still uses lcd which must be constantly updated and doesnt have color.

a mirasol display is uses microscopic mems devices and interferometry to create a bistable reflective color display that does not become harder to see in sunlit environments. like eink the brighter the light the better it looks.

it uses much less energy than even that old fashioned lcd display and can be made thinner than conventional color lcd displays because it does not require color filters. its also capable of showing video.

here is a good pic of two devices in similar lighting that provides a good comparison. the display on the left is backlit and constantly updating to provide the image on its display. the device on the right is neither backlit nor updating to provide the image.

take the devices outside on a sunny day and the device on the right would be even EASIER to view while the device on the left would be harder to view.

here is an image of mirasol next to b&w eink together in the same lighting. this image is from several years ago and the display is "hand built". the production display are better .

I would like to get some quality time with one of these. Maybe see how some comics and such look on them.
