Yes, NZ citizens can be extradited to the US.

He is now a NZ resident - this scares me - according to local news sources, "His residency application for New Zealand initially failed the "good character" test, but was approved after he invested $10 million in Government bonds and made a donation to the Christchurch Earthquake Fund"

That makes it look like you can buy your way in here. Glad I didn't make that decision, whoever did must be worried now.

Since when government officials are responsible for their decisions? Paying for rights of residency works in many countries. Just look to Russian mafiozies who have found their shelter in the UK.

It is scary. This guy got ran out of Germany then moves to NZ and pays for citizenship. Could it be the NZ needed the US help fixing a mistake? After reading multiple articles it sounds like this guy had slip through the law multiple times which leads me to believe there's probably other things they wanted to charge him with but couldn't due to not enough evidence so they took what evidence they could and hope it will stick this time.

When this first started I thought it was just Copyright infringement and the big movie companies at play but the more I read the more I realize that was not the case.

It's actually residency not citizenship, but heading down the same track. You have to be a resident for a certain time (I think it's 5 years) before you can become a citizen.

It does seem that way. The NZ officials were probably looking for a way to get him out and then this extradition request came along. They jumped at it.

Yes but I'm not exactly sure what - apart from things like holding a passport and voting. A resident can enter and leave the country without reapplying for visas.

I was thinking more in terms of extradition. Many countries won't extradite their own citizens unless the crime has ocurred in the country asking for extradition, and then it usually has to be a violent crime. In Mr Dotcom's case the crimes has taken place globally and - as far as I know - nobody gut physically injured. However, if it is not a citizen then extraditions rules tend to be more lenient.
