Hi. New to Kindle..trying to download from Guttenberg, but Acrobat Reader doesn't seem to recognize the mobi format. I can download, but cannot drag and drop into Kindle. Any suggestions?

Welcome to MobileRead

Acrobat reader has nothing to do with the Mobi format, it's for PDF's.

Here are the basic steps for adding your own Mobi file to your Kindle...

1)Download the Mobi file (depending on the book you might find a better copy here on MobileRead).
2)Plug in Kindle with USB cable.
3)'Open' the Kindle to view it's folders
4)Drag or copy & paste the Mobi file into the Kindle's 'Documents' folder
5)Eject the Kindle
6)Book should now show up on the Kindle's 'Home' screen

If you're talking about the Kindle application: double-click the mobi file. Or right click and select "Open with" and choose the Kindle Application.

If you're talking about a Kindle device: <EDIT>See AnemicOak's post above</EDIT>.

For clarity sake:

"Adobe Reader", formerly known as Adobe "Acrobat Reader", is for reading PDF format documents.

Adobe also has ebook reader software for reading ePub format ebooks; its called "Adobe Digital Editions" (often referred to as "ADE" here on MR). ADE is also used for managing the download of DRM (Digital Rights Management) encumbered ePub and PDF files.

The Kindle format doesn't need special software like ADE to manage the download of DRM'd MOBI/AZW format files.

As others have said, the non-DRM MOBI files available at Project Gutenberg, and similar, can be downloaded directly on Kindle devices using the Kindle's web browser or downloaded on a computer and "sideloaded" by copying to the \documents folder when the device is connected via USB. You can also email the downloaded MOBI files to the Kindle device either as an attachment on a regular email or by using Amazon's new "Send to Kindle" software utility.
