Is it a trick question? I don't see fish mentioned anywhere, how do we know anybody keeps fish?

Four pets are mentioned (Horses, Cats, Dogs, Birds). The one who keeps fish is the one who doesn't keep Horses, Cats, Dogs or Birds.

No, it' not a trick question. And it's possible to solve without having a brain like Mr Einstein!

(Accidently I've found this riddle two weeks ago, so I would feel like cheating.)

THAT is the point! Nothing it mentioned about fish, especially who might keep them, and Maianhvk's questions was:

We might 'assume' that , as Paul says, the one who keeps fish is the one who doesn't keep the other pets (the German,) but we don't have any facts to back it up, which is why my answer was

In reality, we don't know for certain of one of the others ALSO keeps fish...

Thanks, Billi, but this only tells us that the German has no pets listed. The original information doesn't give any indication that the one without any pets listed might have fish. Anh's actual question wasn't asking 'who keeps fish,' rather it asked 'can we determine' who keeps fish. The only possible answer is 'no.'

The riddle does mention that all house owners keep a "certain pet" and that no two owners have the same pet. The question asks "...who keeps fish?" meaning that one of these owners has fish.

At least that is how I am interpreting the question.

Stitchawl, I see your point but I also interpreted it like red_pheonix did. Maybe it is a little bit unluckily translated as in German it goes: Wer hat einen Fisch (Who has a fish)?

We know three things to start (milk in the middle, Norwegian on the end and the blue house beside the Norweigian). The house colours were the next easiest thing to figure out since we knew where blue was and the green and white were buddies so there were only two combinations even if you were guessing.

I guess we have to wait for Anh to wake up to find out which part of her question was to be answered.
"Can you determine who keeps fish?" to me seems to be two questions;
A. Can you determine something?
B. Who keeps fish?
Only Anh can tell us which she was going for.

Sort of like "Why is the sky blue?" Another two-part question.
Theologians have been asking the question; "Why?" for years and getting a multitude of answers that are all at differing levels, so we can skip that part of the question, unless we too want to spend years on it.
And the second part; "Is the sky blue?" Well, yeah. Just take a look at it...

While it's true that there are no listed pets for the German, there is also nothing that says the German keeps fish. He may. Or he may not. All we know is that there are no other listed pets for the German.

Well well well, I knew you guys would debate about it...

There are indeed 3 possible answers, you all came up with them:
- We can't determine who keeps the fish, because the fifth pet can be any animal: the word "fish" isn't mentioned anywhere but the question. That fish is the fifth pet is only our assumption, so the first possible answer is that: we can't. (Stitchawl, Bilbo)
- If you do it the normal way, it's only a logical and technical process: you assume that fish is the fifth one, and then after some minutes you're sure that the German keeps fish. (Billi, HIMS)
(as for Paul, I'm not sure which side he's on

)

However, the full answer I was expecting has 2 parts: first, you conclude that the fifth pet doesn't have to be fish, and second, you use all the clues to exclude 4 people (Not Brit, not Dane, not Swede and not Norwegian).
In other words, you can't determine who keeps the fish, but you know who don't.

So... nobody's perfect, but together we can solve the famous quiz! It's rumored that Einstein said only 2% of the people in the world could solve his quiz, but we don't know if it was really Einstein's. And I think the world is also more intelligent now than it was in Einstein's time, because many people can come to one of 3 answers pretty quickly.

Over to... er, Stitchawl, or Billi, or HIMS. (Paul's and Bilbo's answers were not very clear...

)

Open the pdf file and on pages 6-8 you see this problems solved in pictures. The text around is in German but I think one can guess the logic nonverbally, "Regeln" is rules and gives the number of the sentence.
