What's New in Version 2.0

Introducing iBooks 2 — now with iBooks textbooks.

• Experience gorgeous Multi-Touch textbooks designed for iPad
• iBooks textbooks are filled with interactive features, diagrams, photos, and videos
• Tap to dive into images with interactive captions, rotate 3D objects, swipe through image galleries, watch videos in full screen, and more
• Use a finger as a highlighter when swiping over text in a textbook
• Take advantage of Study Cards to help you memorize important highlights, notes, and glossary terms
• Tap glossary terms to see definitions of key topics and concepts without leaving the page

The iBookstore offers textbooks on Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, and Physics from McGraw-Hill and Pearson.
These textbooks are currently available to customers in the United States. Textbooks from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt are coming soon.

iBooks textbooks are created with iBooks Author — now available as a free download on the Mac App Store.

Has anybody with a large bookshelf downloaded iBooks 2 yet? In the past, I've had issues where iBooks would mess up the careful manual sorting that I've done. And right now, I'm not in the mood to spend a few hours re-sorting my bookshelf...

I upgraded and I have about 600 books. Everything went fine and all my collections remain unchanged.

I wonder what the new format is exactly... It can be opened with Digital Editions (if extension is changed to .epub) but it looks rather ugly... Any ideas?

It looks like it's iOS 5 only (downloaded it but won't run on my iPod Touch with iOs 4).

Wasn't there a new version of the epub format being finalized? I wonder if that's what it is. All my old epub books continue to work fine in ibooks 2.

There are three new formats available, all based on HTML5.
There is this for Apple, KF8 for Amazon, and ePub3 for everybody else.
So far Apple and Amazon have produced toolkits to create files in their proprietary formats, and reading software to read them.
So far there isn't much movement on either for ePub3.

To me, it just reads like another tech scribbler with an axe to grind, who seems to think that 'choice' is a great thing, unless of course, you're choosing Apple... As I see it, the 'competition' to books created by iBooks Author aren't regular ePubs, they're eBook Apps.

Apple still supports ePub. iBooks can still read ePub. Apple's Pages can export as ePub. But <shocker> ePub doesn't do everything that everyone might want. So Apple introduced a new format to handle this (e.g. the bells-and-whistles stuff) made some free software that makes it very easy to produce content in this format, and sell it through their store.

It's a very simple choice; use the free tools or don't.

Is that the reason, renaming to epub makes the new Apple format readable in Digital Editions? Has that worked with regular html files?

My update to iBooks 2 didn't not cause any problems with my bookshelf. However, it seems to me that the bookshelf is much slower to load (and books take a look time to load their real covers instead of the generic covers assigned by iBooks).
