I use to have problems but after I upgraded to windows 7 and maximizing memory it seems to be ok. 6.6 seconds and ~12,500 books. I also lost all previous settings so maybe that's what fixed my slow startup. I did have custom columns.

Just done as you suggested capnm,
(Set the maximum number of sort 'levels'") (Specify columns to sort the booklist by on startup) Close tag browser before exiting etc It didn't make any change to my 2min startup time. Its weird to have a program take such a long time to start up from a rebooted system, even photoshop only takes 14seconds on my system. I guess I'll have to remove all my custom columns - but that'll pretty much break the way I use calibre. If I don't have my genre column and my audio book column, then I'm not going to be able to use the program to easily find the books I want to read etc.. Maybe there's some other bug or setting specific to our libriarys that is causing this issue. Anyway for now I'll either just stare at the blank white Calibre window, or go make a cup of tea on restarts ![]() |

Regarding getting the attributes of the formats, Kovid and I have changed calibre to ask for that information only when needed. This change will be available in this week's release. I don't know how much it will help. In my tests of a 4,000-book library it improved performance by 20%, but that was with information cached. A start after a boot will see a larger improvement. Please note that if you have composite columns that use any of the functions "formats", "formats_sizes", or "formats_modtimes", then you likely won't see any improvement. If you want to test to see if it's related to your custom columns, it'll only take a few cups of tea ![]() *Look under Library Maintenance - Metadata backup status |

@ chaley
I don't have any composite columns, just several yes/no and a format one, I'll try removing them anyway and see. Will look forward to that update, thanks for the reply @ capnm weird that my issue is just on reboots. I have some Earl Gray in the caffettiera this morning so I'll give it a go. Want to remove all Plugins and try without - but not sure how to do that without loosing things like books on my "read list plugin" etc Edit: Well got the new update, and also copied my library to troubleshoot. Normal Boot with some custom 2min 25sec Default columns - no custom 1min.15sec So Custom columns are causing a 70second delay on boot. (not composite) restarts during the same windows session are fine though, I guess it's just something I'll live with for now, its not a major issue, and seems to be only me, so no point using up forum space on it. thanks for the suggestions though. See http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/portable.html IIRC -- Create a folder eg 'CalibreTest' containing: calibre-portable.bat A copy of your existing Calibre2 folder A copy of your existing CalibreConfig folder Ignore the part about copying your library -- just run the .bat and point to your existing library after calibre starts. (Actually, I think it will already, since you've copied your settings.) I've always set calibre up this way so I'm just a couple of mouse clicks away from a new test copy, or having my customized install to another machine ![]() |

Just one that shows format, epub, lit, pdf etc
Looking at it just now, it does seem to be build from other columns - at least thats what it says - so I guess that is a composite one. |

Uncheck "show in tags browser". The standard formats category gives you the same functionality, so you won't lose anything. Once unchecked, I suspect that your two minutes will drop to some number of seconds. |

@ capnm
A portable install, nice fresh one with no plugins etc, that sounds like a good idea - why didn't I think of that, I'll get on that as soon as I have a clear head. Network - not really, using my home system, just one PC, one HD very reliable connections, I'm starting to wonder if windows 7 search indexing service is having an impact here, anyway have a few more things to try. |

Sorted!
Startup time of 14seconds woohoo Just for reference it was nothing to do with internal library or calibre in the end, Every month or so I do a full security audit on my system, (apart from the MSE scans etc) and as soon as yesterdays was finished some trojan's showed up that were not detected normally. As soon as they were sandboxed my start up in Calibre was lightening quick Thanks for all your help I hope lugopt, DrChiper or anyone else with startup issues gets it sorted soon. Malwarebytes is what actually caught the issue, in case your wondering. But you should always use several programs, just to be sure. |
